I am looking to back up my 2008 Satnav disk and storing it  in my mates disco.
has anyone tried backing these up? If so have you experienced any issues.

Sorry guys, but what can you possibly be talking about that it is illegal to back up your own disc? I understand if you are making copies, but are you saying that in Britain you can't back up software? I have noticed you fellas are quite the legal eagles on this site, but WOW!
Edit- I see the initial post now about "storing" in a vehicle of a friend. Not exactly cool, but his choice nonetheless. Now how exactly will he get in trouble, from the GPS police, or maybe the copyright gestapo will come to his house.

Any talk of 'backing up' is pure nonsense and we all know it. It matters not whether you will get caught or not, it's piracy and hence illegal.
In this case that is not even up for debate as the OP has stated his intentions.

Ripping off £100 satnav DVD for a £30k car is pretty distasteful.
Next thing we'll be seeing clothes pegs and drive tarmaccing in the "For Sale and Wanted" section.

fair comment and point taken. For the cost of a new disk it isnt worth upsetting anyone so I wont be doing it.

I don't mean to preach here but as my site is victim to lost of piracy of our safety camera database it grates a bit. Some see nothing wrong in stealing software but its not victimless whether it is a three man outfit such as mine or a large operation such as Navteq.
We used to offer a £2/month subscription but had so many people subscribe then post the files on forums, sell them on eBay etc that we had to drop it in favour of annual only which has reduced the problem a lot. Although we can identify the source from tracking data in a file the thieves were willing to risk the loss of £2 to pirate it. And so the occasional honest subscriber for whom £2 was affordable every 3mths or so has lost out and now has to either pay £19 for a years subscription or do without. Darren Griffin

As a photographer I'm always having copyright photographs stolle and used without fees on various web sites. I've lost £ thousands! Loving the power of the TDV8!

Look, I agree that making copies and selling/giving away is wrong and illegal. I made a backup of my disc for my own security and nothing else. Sorry for touching on an obviously sore subject. Does this mean I can't ask for help with mechanical or electrical issues because it is taking food from the mouth of an LR tech? J/K, don't answer that. Some of you guys need to lighten up a little.

No, various bits of European klegislation specifically allow you to service your vehicle however you choose and even have the warranty protected, not good to compare that situation with outright theft surely???

Software piracy really does cost people money - certainly developers/software houses. I couldn't put a figure on it, but I'm sure that this is reflected in prices handed on to the consumer. 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

some many years ago, a friend and I spent a long time developing and writing an excellent piece of software for the BBC computer. People that tested this for us were extremely happy with this. We decided to burn this to EPROM for the 'beeb and sell it through magazines and A.R. rallys. At first it went well but within 3 months orders dribbled to a stop, This confused us but when attending a rally at Brighton we discovered quite a few people selling a much cheaper (renamed) program on EPROM that did all ours did. We purchased one and when we downloaded the code we discovered our names in the coding. It was our code byte for byte, blatantly pirated (and protection was non existant then). Never ever wrote commercial software after that. It cost us more money to develop the software than we ever re-couped.
