and was wondering if this is all down to driver
Hmmm...If you look, the P38 driver takes a different (and much more sensible) line/approach to the D3 driver who get's himself stuck on the same step every time. In this case, the fault is probably with the driver.
Also the D3 driver seems to back off every time his wheels start spinning....there's no need to floor it, but if you don't keep an even pressure on the accelerator the electronics can't work properly....
Don't take my word for it though... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Unnecessary quote removed
I think you are right but there is also another factor helping the RR. The D3 had removed the loose gravel at the bottom of the bank. I think this is what made it so easy for the RR.
The D3 driver would have made it if he had kept the throttle up and not given up but the RR only got up so easily due to the D3 clearing the way. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

it did look like a big lip hidden beneath all that loose stuff, but would tyres have also contributed?

More aggressive tyres would have dug it out quicker but same would have happened.
More aggressive attitude by the D# driver would have done the same. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

also looks as though he had no difflock working, but essentially agree. Momentum would have easily carried him through without drama. Of course we'll make it... were in a landy!
