Bad vibration came and went, thought wheel was coming off!

Hi Guys,

So I have now experienced this problem twice in two different D3 I have owned. I was on the dual carriageway today pushing around 85 as I am trying to burn off stuck turbo vanes (but thats another matter in another post!).

So it starts off as a mild vibration (thought it was the road at first) and gradually gets worse to a point the wheel felt like it was coming off! Obviously slowed down and came off at the next exit but the vibration continued right to the point of turning off where my speed went down to 5 MPH, at this point it completely disappeared and everything was normal. Stopped the car and checked it over no visible signs of a problem. On my return home it did not re-appear.

So this is the second time it has happened in two different D3's with exactly the same symptoms and same speeds.

Anyone else experienced this, if so did you find the cause?

I had a stuck front left (LHD) caliper piston. Did check if any of the wheels was hot/warm? No need to touch the wheel or brake parts, you’ll feel it from a distance already....... Whistle

For me it did come and go a few times before the diagnosis was made. Replacement was new caliper + pistons as the old one’s seals had gone bad, there was water and rust inside.

I have had simular on my D4 works van it turned out to be the park brake shoes on one side binding on.
The faster you go the hotter they get and start binding more

Thanks Guys, I sort of suspected this, any remedial action required or hope for the best?

- diagnose properly
- change or repair failed component(s) (like there are kits with seals for calipers but if it is Censored might be more useful to buy a new one rather than recondition)
- test

Thumbs Up
