Is the battery the cause of my HDC fault?

Hello again! I finally have my code reader for the Disco, so can try to put this one to bed.

The fault is a randomly occurring HDC fault, some days it does it almost immediately, others I can manage a whole journey without it appearing.

I tried testing the battery with a multimeter but always ended up with 13.1V, even after leaving the car for a while. But now I am able to read the voltage on the code reader and I'm getting 12.4V with the ignition in position 2, and 12.19V with the lights on at the same time. Cranking it dropped to 8.99V. This seems too low to me, but I know nothing about the Discovery 3 apart from what I find here!

The fault codes that came back after clearing the stored codes were:

C1A00-88 - Vehicle Dynamics Control Module
U0128-87 - Lost comms with Parking Brake Module
U0416-94 - Invalid data received from vehicle dynamics control module

The HDC fault also appeared every time the iCarsoft read the Vin and then the modules in the car.

Thanks again.

Yes, low voltage during cranking will give a brief HDC failure

As Pete eluded to battery not holding current. With the engine running you should be able to clear the fault and continue without issue.

Unless that is the battery is completely banjaxed!

No errors came up on the steering angle sensor, but I could always try a calibration just to make sure.

Today the voltage was 12.35V, and dropped to 11.5V when I turned the ignition to position 2 Shocked

I have been connecting the battery to a CTEK every month or so, but it appears to have made no difference. Perhaps the battery is so far gone that I am only getting a surface charge, and the CTEK isn't able to fully recharge the battery. The little green indicator lights on the battery has been showing the whole time too to say it's fully charged Laughing

Fiddling around with the steering angle sensor data and I'm getting live data from the module itself and the vehicle dynamic control module. But the Ride level control module just shows "0 degrees" all the time.

Is this the same for everyone else, or a unique feature of mine?

To muddy the waters further I'm getting C1A96-62 Brake lamp switch circuit error.

I had replaced the switch around a month ago, but the code keeps coming back when cleared. I tested the voltage going to the switch from the red and the green/orange wires and they both read 12.8v with the ignition in position 2.

Looking at the live data the switch is responding correctly when pressed and released, both circuits read the change.

I sat in the car just pressing the brake pedal with the engine running and almost every time it would cause a parking brake fault to display on the cluster, and then after a few more the HDC fault appeared.

Any thoughts welcome!

I had hoped it would be the red wire, but now I'm not so sure.

I think I have now solved this. It was . . . . the brake switch. Although the battery probably needs replacing too.

Apparently the Britpart switch was either broken or just rubbish. A new genuine LR switch and everything is working again.
