MY D4 started coughing up a lot and all dash lights dimming upon morning start I guess battery needs chargin? weirdly it shows 13V hmmm?

So looking at workshop manual and CTEK manuals what would you peeps asy is correct procedure to cherge battery in situ?

I am getting 14.3-14.5 V while engine running so should be OK.

just choose the one that suits your set up and remember to set your ctek to agm if your disco has an agm battery fitted

i guess negative to chassis plus to plus terminal set to AGM wait "20" min jobs done? Wink

A fully charged battery at rest (not just after charging with either alternator or CTEK) should be 12.8 volts.
The CTEK should be attached positive to battery and negative to chassis earth - this allows the Battery Monitoring System to know about the charge.
Don't bother to set the CTEK to AGM, and certainly don't use recondition mode under any circumstances.

Just out of interest why should the reconditioning setting not be used? first thing I did was use this after purchasing my CTEK charger.

Nope the CTEK is smarter, and can handle an AGM battery safely.

So with all this quarantining and the lack of vehicle movement I am going to take the punge with a CTEK charger. I have had the dashboard warning light recently and suspect it’s the start stop battery, however keeping the main battery in good order seems sensible.

I’m going to go for one of Martins cables and use the white tow electrics.

Now I was going to buy the CTEK MXS 10 as it gets a lot of recommendations however on looking at them it only comes with 2 year warranty. Compared to the MXS 7.0 that comes with a 5 year warranty. So for my needs I’m thinking go for the MXS 7 and the longer warranty.

Am I right to think that the main difference will be how quick it actually chargers the battery or are there other benefits of the MXS 10 over the MXS 7?

We are planning to enter the caravan game next year (was gonna be this year Big Cry ) so I’m hoping the MXS 7 will meet all the likely caravan needs.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I believe the MXS10 can be used as a power supply unit - for example for supplying a 12 volt supply in a caravan. Consequently they could be used 24/7 at a fairly high amperage and will not last so long. My son actually uses one in his caravan because it was cheaper than buying a PSU when his bit the dust.
To be honest an MXS5 will do the job admirably - higher amps just means less charging time, but if your car sits on the drive for days on end or like mine for weeks on end without moving then a lower power unit will be just fine.
Edit: Just to add, I use a 10 year old CTEK XS 3600 to charge my car via the towing electrics. These things last for ever, which is more than I can say about the Aldi/Lidl jobbies.

The Ctek towing electric adaptor off the shop are superb quality. Get one with the Comfort indicator lights and potentially the longer lead if you need it. I’d get both options if buying another one Thumbs Up
I have the MXS10 as it has a Supply Mode which provides a clean voltage for doing CCF updates with an IID or when cleaning it with doors open.
I think it also charges quicker than the 7. I just topped mine up today. Took about 3 to 4 hours to get it to stage 7 on the indicator lights (green bar).

What is supposed to be used as a chassis earth for jump starting/charging? I’m in a bit of a situation at the moment, as the battery seems to have discharged for some reason and I am unable to close the garage door for the night where the car is parked....up and over door - car in the way Rolling Eyes I’ve got it on charge but it’s not gonna charge enough to start it before dark.

I've got a Victron 10amp blue tooth charger which displays status on your mobile.

Have wired in an Anderson plug for jump starting & tyre compressors.

Attempting first charge of the smaller Start Stop battery with the CTEK MXS 10.

It’s been running for over 7 hours now and has NOT progressed from the Desulphation STEP 1. Although the error lamp is not lit.

I’m thinking that’s looking like a duff battery. Anyone else had a similar experience but found it comes right eventually?

There has deffo been a sulphur smell so I’m thinking it’s doing something.

I did read on google about the CTEK’s been a bit temperamental if the earth connection isn’t good. I think I am pretty well anchored on with the crocodile clips.
