Battery and Electric cable size and sourcing

I'm in need of some decent gauge battery cable to run from D3 battery to the trailer battery and also some general wire for powering usb/cigarette sockets for trailer.

So:-

1. Does anyone know what gauge I need for the battery i.e. What is already on the D3. As both batteries will be fed from same alternator I'm guessing safest bet is to match the tow vehicle cable. I'm thinking probably 40mm Square?
2. What size cable for cigarette socket. I'm thinking 4mm square?
3. Anyone got a source for all above and reasonably priced? And if my metric sizes are correct, what is equivalent gauge (not important, just for interest?).

I need about 16 metres of black and red battery cable and probably about 10 metres of the smaller one.

Ta in advance.

Used these in the past for connectors and cable http://www.polevolt.co.uk

What are you trying to do with your trailer battery ?

What's on your trailer?

I might be wrong here but I think you only need cable the same as that’s on the alt rather than the big cable that goes to the starter.

I'm happy with the setup as I've done same on previous LR/trailer combos. In simplest terms I want to send twelve volts direct from battery on the D3 (via split charge solenoid) to the trailer battery on the trailer when engine is running whilst vehicle in motion via anderson connectors during which time there will be no draw off the battery in the trailer (which incidentally only powers some USB lights, a fridge and charges our phones overnight).

On my last two LR/Trailer combos I took a tip from someone and just purchase two sets of HD jump leads and chopped the clips off each end and voila, cheap cable and the correct thickness. However, on this occasion I got burned!! I bought these off Amazon and they were rated as HD 800 amp......80 more like.....if your lucky!!!!

So this time I was thinking lesson learnt just go and buy the proper cable first as last and be done with it.

I could even use these for my cigarrette socket there's so little copper in them!!!!

Vehicle Wiring Products Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I have used them since the early 1980's.

The other company in this area who are equaly good are:-

Autosparks:-

https://www.autosparks.co.uk/

who supply components and make wiring looms to order.

They too are highly recommended.

Lots of votes for Vehcile Wiring Products from here and elsewhere. Seems I'll get what I need from them this time around.

If you want battery level cable IE 35-40mm2 then the major players like AES and Vehicle Wiring Products are expensive at £9/m. If you buy on ebay it can be had for £4.5-£5/m delivered if you buy 10m. If buying this kind of stuff then you need to factor in a proper crimp tool.

Proper crimp tool already in toolbox Wink As I say I've done this before, just used a different source for cable before and got let down this time around. I'll take a look on ebay too though, thanks.
