Battery opinions

Hi all,

I have just replaced the battery on my MY11 Disco 4 HSE, as there have been a couple of times this year where I've had all the warning lights come on where the battery was almost flat! Unfortunately, common sense did not prevail and I've ended up replacing the YUASA 850CCA, with a VARTA 800CCA, so 50 amps less cold cranking ability coming into the coldest time of the year Rolling Eyes . Also, the little indicator thing on the YUASA battery was green (healthy), so why I didn't check this before buying the new battery I will never know.

The question I have for you all is this, should I be concerned about 50 amps less? Personally I would have thought anything more than 850 would be a bonus, but sadly in this case it's less! I'm hoping this might cure my 'dimming' dash light issue, though I suspect that may be something else causing that (new alternator fitted last winter).

Looking forward to your responses! Hopefully brains will be involved next time.

I should also add that the battery removed was a YBX3019, which is not an AGM battery. Bit worried now, as someone once said to me that both D3 and 4 should always have an AGM battery??

I believe you may have to update the BMS unless the new battery is a like for like change.

Quote:
The D4 has a Battery Monitor System ("BMS") that maintains a state of charge lower than 100% to allow for the alternator to charge on over run. It needs to know that there's a new battery fitted so it can fully charge it.

Thank you both for the replies. How necessary is the AGM battery, as my car is an early 11 plate, and obviously too old for start/stop?

The battery I removed was non AGM, so presumably the BMS will know it's the same type of battery?? Failing that I'll have to pop it in somewhere and get it updated!

Hi alex0264, I have a MY11, originally it has a non AGM battery, however when it failed LR replaced under warranty (at the time) with an AGM battery. No problems 5 years later.

LR moved to the AGM format as they tolerate discharge better and they charge faster. With the amount of juice a D4 uses even while off (periodic wake ups) plus short trips by owners they resolved most battery issues experienced via AGM. If you’re good to your vehicle and do reasonable drives, you’ll be ok with a standard battery.

I recommend you charge it with a good charger once a month in the hope a good top up charge will extend its life

Don’t believe the green indicator on the YUASA battery. I fitted the same battery to my 5.0 Supercharged and within about 4 months had many issues. Despite the green indicator it was only producing 30Amps due to an internal failure. It was replaced under warranty but not before it blew my surround camera module which just compounded the problem.

I assume that the BMS would need to be told this.

I will change my standard battery to AGM (Exide EK950) and asked GAP Diagnostics (IID Tool) what to change: Clear answer: No change necessary, the values are not used from the ECU.

BUT: I would recommend a change of the BMS at the minus pole of the battery to the newest version (LR048601) which should solve problems with battery power (open doors/lights, preheater) - see SSM54517.
