I have just tested my spare battery and it read 13.09v. Obviously this is off the vehicle and on the bench but is that a little high or about right?

Cheers,

Darren

Hi Darren and how long has you battery been off the charger.

All lead acid batteries end up with a surface charge while being charge, but this surface charge is not a true indictor of the battery’s actual State of Charger ( SoC ).

This surface charge voltage will dissipate over time if the battery is left standing with out use.

To get a fairly accurate SoC of a battery that is not in use, not connected to a vehicle or anything else, you need to let the battery stand for at least 24 hours and then compare the battery’s voltage to the chart Robbie has posted.

That chart is for OPEN CIRCUIT battery voltage measurements and as above, to be accurate, the battery must be left in a No-Load/No-Charge state for at least 24 hours.

NOTE OPEN CIRCUIT voltage charts do not apply to batteries still in a vehicle. This is not an OPEN CIRCUIT situation.

Should typically drop back to around 12.7v after 12~24 hrs or so.

Yep, most batteries will have a rested voltage reading of somewhere between 12.7v and 12.75v if the battery is fully charged.

BUT, Darren, if your spare battery is an Optima Yellow Top, the rested voltage for one of these is 13.2v

It's a Bosch S4 and it's been off the Ctek about a week following a recon charge. Is it fecked if that's high then?

Hi Stew and try putting a small load on it and watch the voltage over a few hours.

If it’s stuffed, the voltage will just keep going down.

If it’s still holding a charge, the voltage should drop to about 12.6ish and settle there.

This is one of the main problems of trying to work out the actual SoC of a battery that has not been in use for a while by measuring it’s voltage.

This article gives you an idea of what drivesafe is alluding to when the difficulty of determining SoC comes up. I use a modern Midtronics battery tester that uses electrochemical impedance spectroscopy - it still not a perfect method of testing batteries:

Batteries cannot be measured per se; their health can only be predicted or estimated using indirect measurements. This is synonymous with the weatherman predicting the weather.

I have one of these from Amazon and stick it in my cigarette socket. Interesting readings on a journey and visible from the driver's seat. For £3.69 it's a steal. Great to keep an eye on things but hard to interpret the readings not because of the device but because the readings are sometimes high and sometimes very low presumably because of sophisticated charging. It describes it as LCD but mine is LED i.e glows bright red not dull grey. That makes it easy to see in the dark.

It does not need disconnecting as it switches off shortly after the ignition is off
