Best coating and bolts for rock sliders

Having got over the relief that after being hidden for over a decade, my D3 still has sills (Thanks Steve Norman!) I need to get Uncle Ray's rock sliders re-coated and back on again.

What's the forum's wisdom on the best coating for aluminium rock sliders? Powder coat seems to flake once it gets damaged - would something like Raptor fare better, and if so should I use etch primer or their adhesive primer?

And does anyone know a good source for screws to go into the pre-tapped holes in the sills? Ideally coated with something ridiculously corrosion-resistant and with something more grippy than an Allen bolt hole to get them back out?

Don't put stainless steel bolts into the car you will get galvanic corrosion of the steel. Use hot dipped galvanized bolts.

If you have to use stainless steel bolts isolate them for the mild steel with nylon washers & sleeve around bolt.

Cheers. Looks like Dacromet outperforms both hot-dip and mechanically applied zinc, and I’d guess as it contains both zinc and aluminium its going to safe for joining aluminium and zinc-coated steel. Just need to find some now!

What about the paint? Anybody used Raptor rattle-cans for this?

Zincalume roofing has been used in Australia as far back as I can remember.

If the alloying elements corrode, it's not an issue. You can replace bolts every 5 years if need be. But if the bodywork starts rusting you end up with a runaway costly mess.

I raptor coated my ali sump guard with spray cans. Think i used etch primer first and then black raptor finish and it still looks good after a couple of years. It did use more than I expected and its not cheap.

Obviously if you are heavy off roading then black paint gets scraped you have work to do each time it happens but just some green laning and fairly normal use for me so no probs to date Thumbs Up

Did one can cover the sump guard? I wondered about doing mine along with the sill guards. It’d look smart until I scratch it!

Thanks Lightwater. That’s my thinking too - it’s making rot in the bodywork worse that I want to avoid. It’ll all be covered in rustproofing stuff before it goes back on too!

Gosh, so to do the sill covers and sump guard it’s not going to be a cheap option compared to powder coating. But might be longer- lasting
