Best EGR valve cleaner/process

I think the time has come to look into cleaning my EGR valves. Is there an established best method? Do the spray's actually work?

Reading through the threads there seems to be a lot of people in favour of blanking them off, whats the general view on this and does this need reversing to get through MOT testing? Disco 4 2012
