Switzerland 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Tonga GreenDiscovery 3

Yokohama GEOLANDAR I/T fitted for the third winter season on my D3 and the wear suggests another 2-3 seasons due on the tyres. That's at about 15000km per season (or 30000 a year).

I do see a change in fuel economy; the cold and the tyre makes 10.5l/100km or 27mpg - the OEM Pirelli Scorpions (RIP at ~40000km) in summer were giving 9.5l/100km or just shy of 30mpg.

Some tests have been performed and I don't seem to need chains Whistle
HDC got me down a snowy bank I later slipped over on when walking the hounds! Rolling with laughter

i've got goodyear m+s on the front and bridgestone's on the back, both are s**t, i need some good 19" winter tyres, my disco 1 never struggles in the deep snow due to it being shod with bfg muds, shame they don't do 19"s,

are the goodyear muds any good in the snow Question as i'd only want to fork out for one set of tyres for all year round as it goes offroad quite a bit too

Dufftown - we're not far from you, and I know first hand that the Vredesteins work great in deep snow & all year round! Very Happy - suggest you give Tawse Tyres in Inverurie a call as the owner runs them himself on his car! & can therefore give 1st hand advice, or alternatively Donside Tyres in Alford (but they may be more geared to the agricultural market & are/were part owned by Tawse anyway!)

Really interesting read thanks Thumbs Up

2 simple questions.

What are these tyres like when driving motorway. I hear they can be very noisy compared to standard tyres?

Second what wheel size offers best selection. I have 19inch rims at present and am told there are a very limited range of winter tyres for that size and it has been suggested I get a set of 18inch rims?

Correct, very limited in 19", only worth looking at Pirelli ATR for an ALL-TERRAIN tyre or Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme as a winter tyre.

On 18", samething for AT tyres, Pirelli ATR or best choice IMHO is the General AT2, well worth a look.

Andy.

P.S. No real increase in noise with the above.

General Grabber AT2 are the dogs danglies for 18" wheels. Better on road (legal speeds) than Pirelli or Goodyear and they look cool as hell too, without being as 'in your face' as the MTR.

Problem is I have 4 wheels & new tyres and no car to put them on Big Cry Big Cry

Duftowndisco3, did the road over to you from Rhynnie last Tuesday. Great snow, just glad nothing was coming the other way!

Was on MTRs on fresh or compacted snow, behaved outstandingly. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Nokian make good winter tyres, Pirelli Ice & snow are ok too Thumbs Up

We're running Nokian Hakkapeliitta R SUV winter tyres on 18's - excellent winter friction tyre for Nordic conditions, quieter and reduced rolling resistance compared to OEM Pirelli Scorpions (better fuel consumption). Extremely happy with these tyres.

Nokian also do a WR G3 for continental Europe (ie snow and slush winter conditions), as well as HKPL 5 normal winter studded tyres, which I run on my 2006 Mini Cooper S, and are excellent, if a bit noisy (stud roar over supercharger whine).

i'm definitely in the mtr stakes , the d3 sometimes replaces the d1 now and again in the fields and offroad, plus if you say there that good in the snow it's the best allround tyre, i'll just have to get another 2 19" rims and leave the road tyres on that set, thanks for the info folks Thumbs Up
