I don't think it increases the max power, or the torque curve, but it seems to make the throttle progression much more aggresive. This along with the fact that it holds onto a lower gear makes it take off at a fair old rate.

Maybe the TDV6 RRS I drove today has Sand setting as the norm... cause that thing just flew and flew !
Very impressive acceleration, great gearbox, chuck-able handling (yes a Land Rover that you can chuck around corners and islands).
Ace !

The throttle becomes much more aggressive, it holds low gears as long as possible, and when you come out of the gas it doesn't shut the throttles down immediately. For this reason, be mindful of using it on the road. But yes, it takes off at a very nice clip in Sand '05 LR3 HSE

Sand driving is nothing like off roading UK style. Basically, keep going and when in doubt, boot it. If the vehicle gets stuck, it is not good for man or vehicle. The gearing is such that power on the move is available to the ultimate, but used in moderation.
Any other setting when on a normal road, should never be taken (unless ice & snow) as it will cause other problems, including ABS and DSC reductions, caution.
On older vehicles 'Transmission Wind Up' was a nightmare at least the D3 has overcome that with hydraulics etc. But it can stick, so be very careful. Don't twiddle the knobs for the hell of it.

Have not had any problems with dunes at stockton beach. Need to turn off DSC and be mindful of traction control and suspension position.

After my month long hickup with a sppeed sensor on one of the wheels (I had 3000km there and back to the nearest garage) I am thinking of driving up to the Air mountains and over the other side to the dunes. The biggest are 300 metres tall, so I;ll hesitate to go over the top full speed.
Most of the drivers are in landcruisers, it will be very interesting to see the comparative performance. I just hope it doesn't go weird on me again - it will be 2500 km to the nearest equipped garage.....

The best of luck worked around that area a lot, the sand is very fine and does your brake discs and pads in very quickly whether you use them or not.
