Which is the biggest offroad tyre you can fit to a MY05 Discovery 3? With big I mean height, in order to achive good ground clearance and good flotation when airing down.
I'm currently running Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60-18 without any problems, but I'm thinking of getting 17" wheels to get more sidewall for offroading. Will spacers (25mm) allow fitting of bigger wheels, or will the tyres then hit the wheel arches instead of rubbing on the inside.
I would liket o hear what people have tried, especially from those of you who have tried spacers with big wheels.
Cheers,

OP,
I just put the same Coopers on and I am getting some tyre rub on the rear wheel arches at the in front of the wheel.
It may the extra weight on the back with the dual wheel carrier and long range fuel tank, being the difference with your experience to mine.

Cooper Zeon LTZ 256/60-18: Where did you buy your tires, what was the cost (in NOK) and what is the year of your car?

In terms of diameter, I reckon 32" is max height without rubbing.
Re width, then that's down to the tyre width coupled with the offset you have on a particular wheel.
BUT, the big 'but' ..... I understand that on newer models [I think my07 onwards], there is an extension to the chassis in the front wheel arch that would give fouling.
For example, I purchased a set of 17's with 265 BFG's from a forum member that fouled on his newer D3.
But fitting to my 05, I had no rubbing issues. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

I haven't noticed any rubbing on my 2005 HSE with the 285/60-18 LTZs, but I will pay a little more attention to this in the future.
I imported my wheels from the States, but I don't remember the exact cost because I bought some other things at the same time

Skimming through a few threads and anything pre 07 seem not to have rubbing issues with large tyres (i.e 265/70/17) on 17 rims.I only use this size personnaly without spacers so can't comment on combined with spacers.Mine's a 06.

It seems like 285/60-18 is the way to go if you you want 18" rims. I think i´ll try this set up on original LR 5-spoked rims whitout any spacers. Since i have a 05 i will not have any problems with rubbing according to the experiences that you other guye here have.

285/65/18 on stock rims. Slight rubbing in rear arches at compression. Quick mod handled this. Shortened rods took care of everything else. 2006 D3 Tonga Green

So you have 65 section tyres? How much taller are they than 60 section tyres of the same width?
Do I understand you correctly in assuming that the tyres rubbed on the outside against the wheelarches? I haven't really notiched my wheels going up in the wheelwells much, so I thought maybe spacers would allow for even taller tyres than 32", which is roughly what my 285/60-18s are. But that may not be the case, then?

The tires rub inside the wheel wells towards the front of the rear wells, if that makes any sense?? There's a raised seam of metal which is welded which protrudes into the wheel well. It is directly behind a "flat spot" which is raised within the liner.
here's the "seam"
And trimmed back
No more rub in the rear.
As for the difference between 65 vs 60, nominal at best. Manufacturer claims are always a bit on the boastful side. Being a gluttonous American, bigger is always better! No spacers required. Not even sure if they are legal in the States?

Martin, I am considering running the same tire on our 05. Any rubbing issues? Can you post a pic of your car at standard ride height?
Thanks Chris

Martin, nevermind. I found your posts in the 18" BFG thread. Thanks again. Chris
