The Thule 947 towbar mounted bike rack takes three (mountain) bikes and is a wonder to behold. As a keen mountainbiker, it gets a lot of use and my bike buddies are universally impressed with it. At the pull of handle it swings away from the back door to allow access to the boot

Other than the solidity & security of the thing, I'd not recommend the LR rack. It's cranked design appears to be more to miss the D2's spare wheel than allow you to open the upper tailgate. (I know it's like that to keep handlebars away from the rear, but I can't help thinking that LR just lazily continued to use the D2 one)

Had I known, I'd have bought the Thule or similar instead.

(and no, it's not mine being sold on fleabay Laughing )

I think that the Maxxraxx design is hard to beat - especially when coupled with the 'fixed plate' towbar design (rather than the swan neck adapter for the D3 removable towbar).

Saying that - I've the swan neck adapter version and works for me.

I've got a Witter, 4 bike rack mounted on the multiheight towbar. works well, and I can use it with the caravan on the back as well. Also, very easy to store.
