Bike Rack With Rear Wheel Carrier

I’m considering buying a rear wheel carrier and I’d like to continue to use my existing bike rack. I have a tow bar mounted Thule one. It’s a great bit of kit, I use it on my Passat regularly and I’m really happy with it. I’m wondering if there’s any way to make it work on the Discovery or anyone with any experience of doing this both with or without a rear mounted spare.

Thanks in advance.

I have been pondering the same decision... I also have a Thule swing away tow-bar bike carrier and want to buy a spare wheel carrier. I have an LPG tank instead of a spare at the mo.

I guess the question is load weight on the wheel carrier. Which one are you thinking of buying?

There aren't many around to buy at the moment... the Terrafirma one I was looking at is apparently tested 50kg which you would easily exceed with a full size spare and two bikes.

I’ve only looked at a few rear wheel carriers to get a rough idea, Terrafirma comes up as a strong candidate. I was hoping not to mount the bikes to the wheel/carrier but see if I could somehow extend the tow bar connection out further so the bikes would pass the wheel.... someone will have done that I think...

Thanks for sharing! I do wonder if the rack I already have might just be far enough away to miss the wheel. It’s relatively far from the body of the car when attached.... failing that I could consider adapting the tow bar holder somehow...

A tow bar receiver instead of the removeable towbar would probably sort you out. There was one advertised recently that was quickly snapped up.

Edit: This was the thread, but at least you know what you are looking for:

Thanks Waterbuoy, very helpful. I've never towed so it's not something I'm familiar with. Then it replaces the standard towbar, carrying out further from the body, I could then attach a standard trailer ball and attach the bike rack to that? Correct?

That is pretty much it. The receiver (as per link above) replaces the removeable towbar with a square female receiver/socket into which various accessories can then be fitted. The tow bar is a standard use, but others also use them to mount a rear winch etc.

Search for NAS Receiver or similar and you will find plenty on the web - they seem to be widely used in the US (That may be the NA bit of NAS?)

Example of the replacement towbar is in following link, but there are many different types available out there.

Exampleof other uses for the NAS receiver include this
