Bit of a dilemma about cambelt change advice please
Had 3 garages quote me 3 different prices one says oil pump has to be changed with cam belt
But 2 say it doesn't and one of these that says it doesn't has done loads of cambelt changes on landrover and range rovers ????
I'm confused

Do all your garages deal with Land Rovers?
A new belt can cause the old style oil pump to fail by putting extra strain on it, hence why the new reinforced pump was introduced.
I would not get the belts done on their own without confirming that you had new uprated pump fitted.
Old pump
New pump

I think for the relative low cost (given ancillaries will be removed to do the belt anyway) and piece of mind I'd get it changed anyway - somebody posted on here the other day that new pump = oil check light going out quicker - which has to be a good thing? Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

05 and 06 models are still susceptible to oil pump failure.
For the relatively low additional cost, its a no brainer to have it replaced at the same time My D3 Build Thread

I have 07 plate, and had my pump changed last month. Now I have the confidence to put my foot down.
If the garage doesn’t recommend getting it done, dont use them.

My D3 is going in on Thursday for new timing belts and possibly oil pump - they are going to check wether the pump on mine has been uprated in the past but if it hasn't been I'm certainly getting it done.
I was was at the garage today and they showed me the differences between the pumps - per the picture above.
I also nosed around someone else's engine that was in pieces and they were rebuilding due to pump failure: new crank, new shells, plus a huge number of other new bits. An expensive repair, so worth upgrading the pump if it hasn't been done while they're in there fitting new belts.
About 4 years ago a friend owned a D3 on which the pump failed, detonating the entire engine. Not pretty.
