bloody hand brake!
Well its been a while since I posted - the Discovery 4 has done 25k miles (now on 142k) since last december when I got it, its been hammered up and down the country and off road
I have had to do the inlet manifolds on the driveway (pig of a job), and a few other things. Then yesterday I got screeching noises and warning bongs and things.
So EPB it must be - I jacked it up and stripped one side down and found most of the pad on the shoes missing so stripped that off. Then the other side the disk was a pig to get off and again it was all pretty ruined inside. I am not sure they have ever been looked at before given the shoes had landrover marks on them.
Then I couldnt get the disks back on I had wound everything back in as I could and just no joy at all so to get moving I simple removed the handbrake shoes and pushed the cable back in. Not ideal I know but there we are.
So my guess is the cable was not infact pulling back in properly on each side which suggests the actuator (I think thats in the middle of the car above the rear diff?) is probably stuck. So off to a garage as soon as someone can look at it to get that fixed. GRRR!!
In summary - I hate EPBs, I hate drum brakes. Why oh why are they not just another small caliper on the bottom of the main disc? Its not like the disk isn't big enough
Anyway - as I do actually like the car despite giving it a kick earlier here are some photos

Have a search on here for Bodsys brake bible. It'll help you understand how to set EPB to service mode, realease the disc/drum, refit and adjust correctly.
They're ok and perfectly serviceable at home, but really need to be checked regularly, and certainly not ignored as part of the service.
The brake bible is a handy reference and worth printing off.2011 MY D4 HSE

Many moons ago, I had a Bertone X1/9, which used a clever mechanism whereby the handbrake used the normal brake pads but was cable operated rather than hydraulic (thus satisfying the requirement for a non-hydraulic dependant emergency brake, I guess).
After a particularly refreshing tootle round the countryside , I got home and parked it on the drive ... which was approx. 25 degree slope.
20 minutes later, there was a knock on the door ... "is that your car in the middle of the road ?", and a police car was pulling up to see wtf was going on.
As the disks had been a tad warm when I parked, they contracted as they cooled and the braking effect lessened, so the car had gracefully rolled down the drive ... fortunately not hitting anything in the process.
Equally luckily, the two police bods did nothing more than took the peas a bit and suggested leaving it in gear in future.
Perhaps stuff like that is why separate drum arrangement is used ?.

or its already toast !! having splashed out a load of cash on a new EPB and discs/pads. I will only let the local indie go near it ! To echo everyone else its defo worth getting it serviced fairly regularly or you can ruin the EPB .

I was involved at the design stage and LR engineers and brake suppliers could not get a park brake, just clamping on the disc, to meet the braking performance both legally and to LR design targets. Remember it needs to work on very steep inclines and they do weigh over 3 tonnes.

And the b d thing has died again. Hunting, seems to be gearbox related as it would rev freely. Any ideas before I set fire to the bloody thing?

If you don't have an iiD you can borrow to help you diagnose the problem. I'm only across the valley near Castle Combe.

That's very generous, thank you!
It died in Trowbridge and I managed to roll it to the gate of j&p whonhave always been decent so hopefully they can sort it out.
The disco isn't the project car, but I seem to spend more time on it than the defender!

Garage have done lots of tests and think the issue is actually related to the fuel system - and the fact I suddenly have a low fuel light even though I have fuel.
Now that make me think about corroded wiring - wasn't there a thing on Discos about the a wiring plug under the rear end?

Corroded wires on the rear going to the in tank pump - so the tanks been dropped and its been fixed (£270) and then handbrake the acutator motor was burnt out so that is a nice big bill to welcome in the new decade!
