I took mine off rubbed them down as I wanted them Satin black sprayed them about 3 times then 2 coats of lacquer stuck them back on with double sided foam tape , all in cost me a tenner as I had loads of lacquer from past jobs

Respraying the letters would also be the approach I would now take.
Fortunately I still have the original letters (the ones I replaced the last time round) plus the template.
The original colour of mine was Brunel Grey Matt Finish paint code LPO and I would use a a 3M double sided foam automotive tape to put them back on (edge of tape was 1.5mm in from the edge of the letters).
