The early D4's had the Nav unit under the passengers seat just like the D3's.

Various things have gone under the passenger seat over time - Rear Seat Entertainment, USB Module, Sat Nav in the D3's (as mentioned) so probably just a standard bracket that gets put in - my GS has it too .

It’s an ideal mounting place for my UHF main body, all the controls are on the mic.

Meridian didn’t arrive until 2014.
The bracket (which always appears to be fitted) is for the Surround camera module and on Asian vehicles, the NAV unit which is different to ROW. The driver bracket (appears not always to be fitted) is for the TV module.

my apologies regarding Meridian audio, i assumed that as the screen on MY12> was the same as the screen on Meridian systems in MY13> Freelander 2 and MY12> Evoque that the head unit in my D4 was Meridian although the speakers were still branded as HK.
So they just changed the GUI then ? The same as the last D4 with the In Control style screen ?

You’ll have to explain the GUI.
I’m not sure what’s better to be honest, HK or Meridian. The Meridian has a better human interface in my opinion but the sound...not sure, the speakers in the Meridian are cheaper which is typical of LR, cheaper parts but inflate the overall price.

GUI = Graphical User Interface i.e. the touch screen
on the early D4 it was the old style similar to D3 with disc driven maps, then the 2012MY facelift introduced the black background with the 3 boxes for Audio/Nav/Phone with the SDD Nav, and IIRC it was about late 2015 that they changed the screen view again for the latest style.
I just assumed the 2012 facelift changed it to Meridian systems.
in the Freelander the 825W Meridian with surround sound was excellent quality, the 380W without surround is also very good.
