Brake Caliper Bolts
Hi All Can you tell me why the caliper bolts need to be replaced when replacing the pads. Are they stretch bolts, similar to head bolts.
Thanks Roger 47

I think its because they have a blue loctite type coating on them, which prevents them coming loose. Once the bolt is removed the coating is ruined. You could probably apply some fresh loctite after cleaning them, and use them again. They only cost pence and are part of the LR kit, so no need to cut corners on brakes.
Gareth is correct, the bolt has a preapplied microencapsulated patch (tiny spheres of super glue in a paste) which when screwed into the joint effectively glues it in place.
It is a single use material so you have to replace the bolt because the factory buy's the bolts in with the material on. I think it's scotchgrip 2353, the material on the left below.
Alternatively put some stud lock on.

Hi All
Thanks for the information. I want to release the front calipers and clean up the pads as I sometimes get a sqeak in time with wheel rotation. I've had it before with other LR's I've owned and by roughing up the pad faces and cleaning the disc you can loose it. But I have never had to buy caliper bolts before. So I think the locktite will be the answer until the pads are replaced.
Thanks Roger 47
