    ▪ Check fuse 15 in the passenger compartment fuse box (behind the lower glovebox)
    ▪ Check fuse 66 in same fuse box (although I would expect ABS warning lamp to be indicated)
    ▪ Check the tow hitch fuses (located in the LH D-pillar) - access via the removable panel in loadspace
(PS - These locations and how to access them are in the Owners Handbook in the 'Roadside Emergency' section)

If it's a blown fuse, there still may be a problem (the fuse did blow for a reason Smile )
    ▪ Do you have the towing electric harness?
    ▪ Does the high-mount stop lamp illuminate?
    ▪ If, while moving faster than 5mph, you apply the EPB (hold up for 2 secs then let go), do the brake lights illuminate?
There's some other possibilities as well, but best to just start there.

[edited because it was such a messy post...]

Hi chaps,

Every D3 has the supplementary fuse box; you just have to feel back on the D-pillar. Even without the tow wiring fitted, a blown fuse there can indicate a short in wiring that could be affecting the brake circuit.

Also, does the high-mount stop lamp illuminate?
And, if, while moving faster than 5mph, you apply the EPB (hold up for 2 secs then let go), do the brake lights illuminate?

Ok i will have another look. is the fuse behind the rear passanger door pillar or towards the rear or the vehicle ?

there seems to be an exhaust for the air suspention towards the rear boot (trunk) pillar they dont make it easy. I will do the EPB teat when i can get the wife to follow me.

Currently the highlevel LED brakelight works ok.

Hi Paxo, strangely, I was just about to post exactly the same problem as yourself! The high level light is the only one that is working, all four stop & tail bulbs are OK, fuses are also OK, side lights work, but not the brake - now I'm lost Confused

The only thing that has happened lately, is that it was in the stealers on Friday, because the airbag warning light was permanently on. They said that there were 2 fault codes showing, which were both cleared and all was now OK. Coincidence, or me being suspicious?? I don't know, but the airbag light is now off (but then so are my brakelights!) Have you had any work done at the stealers lately?

Mine doesn't; I believe it comes with the tow wiring pack.

Solved it last night. Little embarassed though. Embarassed Took the bulbs out again and looked much closer and the brake light filament was broken in the top bulb either side. Don't know why they were gone, but there was a fine break in the filament that I hadn't spotted the night before (well it was dark) Whistle

Also, I checked the lower bulb and although they were OK, I also realised last night, that the brake light is not connected on the lower bulbs, only the side light. When you look at the bulb mount, there is only one terminal connected (the other is blanked off) and the earth. On the top buld there are three wires, 1 earth and 2 connected to the base. Worth knowing that if there is a problem with the top bulb, you can swap the lower bulb to the top to get home with lights!

Paxo

If they were both in the same packet, and made in the same factory/production line, then they will either be equally good or equally crap.

LR EOM bulbs seem to last the best in my experience.

Of course, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking.
Someone needs to write a self-help for brake lamps! Shocked
