Question ? Does the rear handbrake shoes let you know when they are worn? Just thinking about an ongoing fault currently which pops up from time to time?
Rear hand brake shoes should never wear, that’s if the hand brake is adjusted correctly they should never come in contact with a moving hub hence no wear.

I get the orange light with a "brake pads worn" warning which I think is down to the sensor i damaged when changing the rear pads. I've got a new sensor (and new discs/pads for the front) so will change the sensor and check pads and disca all round at the same time.
Not long after I'd had my motor, I got the flashing red brake warning and the epb wouldn't release. A few days prior to it refusing to release, it made an awful squealing noise when being applied (i think i also had the red flashing brake symbol but can't recall exactly). I had to release the epb manually and left it off until I could get round to changing the epb pads, discs and brake pads which I did using Bodsy's brake bible. Turns out they hadn't been adjusted correctly by the previous owner/service centre and had worn away. Following Bodsy's guide, I swapped the bits over, adjusted it correctly and (Touch wood) not had a problem since.
Should be something you can sort yourself just by following his guide.

Shoes will wear if you pull away using auto release.

I had this on mine a while back, turned out that the sensor wire had slipped out of a clip and was rubbing on the rotating hub which partially wore through the cable and thus as the cable flapped about, the light came on and went off.
One way to isolate it to the actual sensor/cable is to unplug the sensor from the wiring loom and replace it with a little wire loop pushed into the loom plug (I used a bent paper clip!). If the light never comes on after this, then the issue is in the sensor or the sensor cable.
