Brake Pads - I think i've been ripped off

Car was in for its 2yr service yesterday and midway through the day i received a call saying that the pads need changing - alarm bells should have started ringing at this point but I was at work and in the middle of a meeting.

They quoted some prices and only half listening I said just do them - my wifes taking the car for the next few weeks and just went for the convenient option.... Embarassed

On picking the car-up they charged me 400 quid !!!! for front and backs... I was in a rush picking up the car and did not really quibble.

However thinking about it I am feeling

a/ Totally Ripped off - reading posts on here it appears parts should be around 100 quid and should be less that 1 hour labour.

b/ Stupid for not questioning / thinking about the $$$ Big Cry

Any thoughts on how to proceed ? And yes I already know that I am a t Censored t.

was it just the pads you had done, or the EPB also and maybe the pad sensors ??

Pads all round cost about £90 from TLO and can be done yourself in around 1.5 hours. if the garage had the wheels off for a service (which they must have if they new all pads needed changing) then it will take them a lot less time.

FYI , I had my first set of pads and sensors changed by dealer and they charged £170 (but that was about 2 years ago). Ive done them myself since.

it was the pads + sensors (I think) - The bill it at home and was too distracted by beer last night to read it properly Whistle

They adjusted the EPB as part of the service.

I feel that is a bit OTT, bearing in mind that the car was probably on a lift with wheels already removed as part of the service, when they phoned you.

I think you should ask them to clarify the cost, and why it was so much.

Sensible dealer rate seems to be under £200 for rear pads and discs (as a sole job - ie as not part of a bigger job when already up in the air with the wheels off).

thanks guys - I need to go through the bill properly and then ask them to justify it. As it happens the car is going back on Friday to get new drivers seat fixings and windscreen trims so I will challenge them then....

Sounds a bit steep and nothing to lose by querying the charges, though you could be onto plums as the price was agreed prior to the work being done and you paid up when you collected the car Big Cry All depends on how good you get on with the dealer I suppose - might be worth just putting it down to experience, life's too short really and the work is done etc.

Think mine was around £175 all in for front at local independant, including sensors.
Might actually do them myself next time, I'm sure I can remember how to change a set of brake pads, they can't be that different to those I did 20 years ago, can they?

I had mine done in May by a local independent but I did get a quote from Harwoods in Basingtoke. They came in at £270 all in....

I also had a quote from Iain which was much better but I had to have them done NOW!!!

Laughing ...good one, I wish!
Was on my Alfasud..actually, last thing I ever did of note on a car was to change it's front suspension to "Koni's" which were really cool in the 80's.
I pronise 110% I used loctite on the driveshaft cv joints but a couple of days later there was a nasty crunch and one of them came undone and shattered the gearbox housing. Cost me LOTS of money.
Have not really touched anything mechanical since.
Shame really as I used to really enjoy faffing around under the bonnet. I changed the something really big once (I can't remember what it was, might have been cambelt), anyway to cut a long story short, I did it all by myself, with limited tools and a Haynes manual and it only went and started first time! I was gobsmacked and hugely impressed with myself. Very chuffed indeedy. I'd only ever messed around with clutch master cylinders/brakes/water pumps on my Dolomite Sprint before that so I was pretty inexperienced really.
The next day, I came downstairs from my flat and found the car up on bricks with all the alloys gone...fecking gutted I was!
It made page 3 of the Surrey Herald. Would have been front page but Hampton Court Palace had burnt down a few days before Rolling with laughter
Looking back on it now it's quite funny. Was a pile of rust anyway so I traded it in for a MG Metro Turbo....WOW.
Another mistake, but it was quite nippy while it wasn't in the garage having it's gearbox rebuilt every 2 weeks.
Sorry...drifted off topic there, memories, happy days.
