With no vacuum, the connection, pedal to the master cylinder is a solid bar but with the servo working the two diaphragms ( Its a duo Servo) are pushing as well which induces a "soft" feel. Its not a very reassuring feeling I admit.
I have just fitted a servo to my old Land Rover as my knees are not what they were and wanted to reduce pedal load. I feel immediately a softer pedal which if I evacuate the vacuum , becomes rock hard.

Yep, the reason being ... you can compress air but you cannot compress fluid.
