a warning sign is flashing up when i put my brakes on saying check brake pads ...does anyone know how far i can drive before it will do serious damage ...re the brake discs ...thanks Confused[/list] land rover lover

Do it now as there is a good chance that you are already metal on metal on one corner or two. LR fit 2 sensors on opposing corners and assume brake wear is/will be even ,some hope, so non sensored corners could be already be eating your discs Shocked .

Not trying to be a scare monger but plenty have had it happen and I'm one of them !!!!

Get on it pronto , pads easy to change and suggest you contact TLO parts manager @ Yeovil Landrover for a great price on parts.

When you get the "Check Brakes" sign - how do you check whether it is discs or pads? How do you check whether it is front or rear?

Can you check visually - and if so what are you looking for.

The trouble with Disco 3 brakes is that the pads do not wear evenly. Parts can seize and cause one side to go down to bare metal whilst the other can be over half full. The sensors on mine were not on the pad that wore and as such molten metal was deposited on the alloy which i then had to refurbish.
I used the drilled/grooved discs as opposed to OEM when I put new discs on thinking they would be better for towing but they warped within 5000mile so always go for OEM parts.
Ferodo are the manufacturer of OEM pads. I got mine from Quickco (Ford parts supplier) at a fraction of the cost of the stealers.

I wouldnt say uneven wear is a common problem, unless you dont use the vehicle then anything can seize Confused

- the front tend to wear evenly befor the rear, but only slightly . the sensors are on the left hand front and right hand rear pads. Discs also need replacing when they get down to 27mm.

New 30.0 mm (1.18 in)
Service limit 27.0 mm (1.063 in)

my pads have consistently lasted for approx 15,000 miles (front and rear) before I have replaced them and discs replaced at about 80,000 miles - but its all down to how you drive..

if the light is on then I suugest you replace then now. pads all round cost about £90 from TheLargeOne and follow Bodsy's brake bible (http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4184) for step by step instructions Thumbs Up

if you are going to use the D3 iffroad then I would stay away from drilled /grooved discos as stones etc can get sutck in the holes and wear the pads out a lot quicker. Duncan
