Brearkdown Insurance / Recovery in France ?? |
|
Off to the Vendee in July - D3 and tin tent. What do people do for breakdown insurance / vehicle recovery in France these days ?
Red Pennant (via Caravan Club) is an obvious, if somewhat expensive option - ideas

Take care as some breakdown policies don't cover breakdown of the actual caravan. They may only recover a caravan which is attached to the broken down towing vehicle.

I have used AA in the past, unbeatable if they still do the same package I have had a RR relayed back from S of France, plus they paid for hire car and flight for 5 back to EM.
Another time I had a front wheel bearing fail on the way down there at Peterborough, they supplied a hire car for the 3 week duration again to S of France, St Tropez All telephone operators are English speaking, I wouldn't go abroad without it.
LR assistance covers you if your car is still under original new car warranty. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

ADAC, biggest recovery firm in the world, full European recovery, inc UK. Low prices compared to AA, best bit is, AA come out to you in the UK if you break down. That's one in the nuts of the AA If in doubt, It's time for a Cuppa.

2nd biggest, USA AAA is the biggest
But best thing with ADAC is they have their own aircraft (helicopters, fixed wing jet and prop) to evacuate you in case of medical emergency from anywhere in the world included in the price, your kids come under you cover so if a tragic problem on a school trip say they would be brought home
There is a thread about it here http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic73675.html?highlight=adac And I can confirm that it is the AA that services you in the UK, same as having AA cover here but with all the extras, call centre is fluent English speaking and apparently sit next to the AA operator in the emergency call centre in France

Landrover recovery are not obliged to bring the van back. If I remember rightly there is a length limit with the aa for the caravan. Read the small print. In my experience I would use red pennant. When I go on holiday I want to relax with no small print catching me out.

I use RAC, they are expensive but excellent.
They recovered my MGB GT V8 with (alleged) gearbox & fuel pump failure from a rally in the Spanish mountains.
Provided me with a replacement car, delivered MG to liaise with me at Santander, and collected it from the ferry in Portsmouth. Then delivered MG to specialist garage in the Midlands. No charge.
ADAC are inexpensive & I believe excellent BUT read their T&Cs very carefully regarding vehicle repatriation to the UK from the continent as IIRC they have the right to refuse to recover and insist you have your vehicle repaired locally. I wouldn't want some provincial mechanic working on ANY of my cars, unless it was simply fitting a replacement part! I also believe that they will also only repatriate your vehicle if they deem its worth more than the cost of recovery.
In the UK I think they will only recover you for a maximum of 50 miles; so it may be sensible to take out ADAC for long Euro mainland trips in addition to your normal UK cover.

Van is 7.2 metres long
Have CC MayDay (Green Flag provisioned) for UK and there's no limit to van length but looking to extend cover for Europe - Red Pennant is the natural way to do this but it's not a cheap option so was looking to seek out some alternative at a lower cost.

As I thought maxium vehicle length to be recovered is 7m for the AA
http://www.theaa.com/resources/Documents/p...urrent.pdf
this includes the trailer/caravan.
Also just be aware if you have a pet they are not obliged to have that in the cab as well.
With Red Pennant it specifically covers the caravan.

I've got Greenflag for the D3 and Caravan in the UK.
I paid 72 quid for D3 and twin axle 'van European cover via Camping and caravanning club using Aria.
Dont know if that helps at all.

That's a route I was considering - at almost 1/2 the cost of RP it's a lot more attractive
