Brown tyres !

My new Pirelli scorpions look decidedly brown.
Don't know if this is just emphasised against the gloss black wheels.
I've washed them, used Muc Off, Auto Glym tyre dresser (and Leathercleaner when I ran out).
But still they look brown!
I'm just about to try Back to Black trim restorer.
But before I do so, does anyone have a product recommendation?
Btw, I don't want that old stuff in a tin that you paint on.

Had same issues with the Pirelli Verdes on our D3 in LA turning an old brown color. I washed them to no avail. Took D3 to car wash, they put tire stuff on them and they are black again now. Must be the rubber compound on Pirelli.

Think I'm getting to the bottom of why I'm getting this brown hue.

Just went out with a bucket of soapy water and scrubbing brush specifically to give them a good clean (rather just when washing the car).
But on the first wheel I noted an oily base when the tyres were wet and I reckon that'll be ......... copper-slip residue !!!!!!
They had used this on the mating faces of the wheel & hub when fitting the wheels after being powder coated.
So reckon this copper-slip residue is from the fitters gloves/hands or the garage floor.


Also, initially after a wash, they look a bit better, but then after a few miles they take on this browner look.
And I reckon that's because the grease layer is attracting road dust (which is mainly dried mud here in the countryside.) which is brown!
Tomorrow, I'll give them a good wipe/scrub using some petrol to remove this greased layer.
And hopefully that'll be the brown mystery resolved.

But would still like to know of a good tyre blackener to use. Thumbs Up

... but that surely wouldn't be evenly spread on the tyre and so more obvious as a "contaminant" ?

if it's even and the tyres are new-ish, maybe it's a coating to stop them sticking together when transported to fitters ?

It's probably just the mould release agent. Should come off with a good scrub.

When I say they're brown, they're not brown all over.
They've got the look of being face down on a dirty garage floor (with dirt randomly over the sidewall), except it doesn't wash off.

My Grabbers have a brown hue when I've cleaned the car & used TFR or Grime. A good dousing in a tyre dressing sorts it for me.

Armor all tire shine is what they use here in the states at the car washes, they either apply it with a brush or spray it on.

At work we have been banned from using copaslip between the wheel and hub faces due to concerns about corrosion.

what are you doing instead ? ultra-thin stainless steel layer ?

Copper grease should never come into contact with rubber as it will perish it, neither should it be used on the mating faces of wheels, threads or hub barrel yes.
Try cleaning the tyres with turp substitute and then treat with Auto Glyn tyre and rubber preservative.
p.s. my tyres are always brown after going through mud Laughing

this is from Mintex website ... but they are trying to sell a non-copper-based alternative. make your own judgement.

It can cause bimetallic corrosion when copper grease is used with aluminium. But it does require an electrolyte, like winter salty water, in this case the aluminium is sacrificed.
