Buy now or wait
I’ve seen a used 2017 Disco 5 HSE Luxury that I like very much and this would be retirement pressie for myself and would, hopefully, last some years. Question is as its now August should I wait until September
As I believe prices are affected by the plate change?
I’m sure I read a thread on here somewhere advising to avoid the TD V6 engine in favour of the later SD6 but that would involve a later model and more money which I would struggle with.
Any thoughts?

Unless I am mistaken, a 2017 model can only be an SDV6 (I have a 2013 Commercial and it was an option back then to have either but that was 4 years earlier)!

Just a thought am not sure how the predicted recession will affect second hand vehicle prices.
Now will people in the UK be moving towards smaller/cheaper/more fuel efficient cars come back end of 2022/23 so drive second hand larger car prices down?
Will car showrooms be offering discounts to get some cash flow as the inflation/recession hits even more?
Throw in the plate change and there is a big mix of reasons with great difficulty in deciding what is best for an individual.
So go for it or wait a bit? Have to decide what is best for you. If you make the right call good on you, if the wrong call do not fret just look on the positive side.
Not much help in the above I know.

Used car prices: the ULEZ effect?
I'm not sure how the recession will affect used car prices, but a much more immediate concern for those of us who live in London's suburbs is the likely extension of the ULEZ.
The "consultation" is going on at present, but I can't see any possibility that the new zone won't be implemented. That means I will need to sell my 2006 Disco 3 and get a compliant replacement.
There is no news about a scrappage scheme, as far as I know, so my dilemma is whether to sell early in anticipation of the change, or to wait it out in the hopes that it won't happen!
Either way it's hard to predict what impact the change will have on the value of my D3 when I try to sell it, but it's clear that the prices of decent used replacements are pretty high.
PS. Paradoxically, I also run a 40-year-old Series III that is ULEZ compliant. But it's far from an every day drive, as many of you will know.

The extended ULEZ charge is why I am thinking of changing my Disco 2009 HSE which is brilliant but being forced off the road. I heard the ULEZ is intended to be pushed out to within the M25 area but I cant see that happening due on cost and boundary limits of the Mayor of London.

The proposal doesn't extend to parts of Hertfordshire, Surrey, Essex and Kent (and maybe others) that have a chunk of territory within the M25. My borough (Harrow) is definitely in scope. All this, despite the fact that the first ULEZ appears to have done very little to change London's air quality for the better.

I would tend to replace any vehicle when the time comes for replacement either with a Euro 6 or petrol, for the simple fact that more and nore cities will most likely have clean air zones.
I tend to get to a lot of cities so i'm grateful that our Skoda is euro 6 compliant and has saved me money.

Buy now if your happy with it. I don’t see the cost is going to dramatically change to be honest. They may come down slightly but not enough to hold you back.
I’ll be selling my 20 plate commercial soon as I’ve also decided to retire this year

The early D5s were TD6 - same engine as the late D4 but only 1 turbo and less power. The SD6 was introduced for MY19 from 68 plate onwards. Adaptive dynamics became an option at the same time and really improves the handling if you can find a D5 with that option.
From MY21, the V6 engines were replaced with straight 6 ingeniums and adaptive dynamics became standard.MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price! - So good I bought another!
MY2012 D4 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - retired to a new home

I believe that the early D5's were in fact the same power as the D4's even though they only had one turbo.
The D4 to my knowledge had 245hp-255hp
The D5 even at the beginning, had 255hp unless you had the detuned version that had 211hp.
How do I know? Because the LR garage in Luxembourg hid this fact from me until after I had signed to buy it!!

I drove nearly 13k miles in a 69 plate Sd6 D5 and several thousand miles in earlier TD6 versions.
The Sd6 really is a great performer. I’d say it was more appropriate to compare it with the SDV8 than the previous TD6 that was in earlier D5’s.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

The SD6 was increased to 300bhp and did indeed have twin turbos, but this didn't come until long after the D5 was in production.
The td6 can also be tuned to give the same power and torque.

The D4 TDV6 was available as a 211 hp (155 kW) version, too, in some markets.
