An interesting video from South Africa. At 7mins 50secs he states to make sure to buy a post 2013 car - much much less chance of a broken crank. Is this bo$$ox? Just a African market thing?
Mind you he also says that that a cambelt change is a body off job....

You can't really mitigate against it Nige as it's a design issue, and in the vast majority of cases not related to poor maintenance.
So it's just down to luck unfortunately, and in my opinion the consequences of two manufacturers joint design, but with two completely different sets of application requirements.
ie. Longitudinal mounting and transverse mounting = crank with missing bearing(s) = disaster! yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

4 of them are cars we've never seen before
Of those, 2 have not been repaired/inspected properly yet
The other 2 both had snapped cranks, with one having had a previous rebuild (lasted around 9k miles, and was done by a cowboy )
The 5th one has 140k miles, that we have looked after for 5 years or so. But, it was an ex demo, that had 0 service history for the first 3 years of its life. The owner did report slight usage of oil recently, and upon stripdown, the primary turbo had axial play, though the oil level was correct at time of failure...My D3 Build Thread

I don't think there's much else they could do with it beyond scrapping it years ago. They do say "you can't make a silk purse out of a pig's ear" 🐷yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Crank has been revised very recently again
Still talk of tabbed bearings, but I've never dismantled a reman lump that failed
In fact, we've never had any replacement engine fail...My D3 Build Thread
Apparently so, but only hearsay. JLR are not forthcoming with that info
Mikey - it appears from what you say that LR are supplying engines (bottom ends?) to you. Can you give me a ball park figure please.
I love the car but have never enjoyed the 'crank lottery'. I'm on 120,000 miles and I'm going to set up a standing order to a savings account for a LR engine, fitting and transport and then relax....

Current retail is £6750 + VAT for a reman lump. Its not a huge amout cheaper for a bare block.
Every one we've ever had has come with a new block + internals and new sump/crankcase. Pot luck if it comes with new or reman heads My D3 Build Thread
My 2016 landmark engine sadly failed at less than 20k miles during the second year of its life, full service history with LR workshops, ironically including an oil and filter service at around 1000 miles, LR replaced with engine turbos ancillaries with a new unit, the bill was around £22k, although it took a month to obtain engine and fit it.
We sold it very shortly afterwards, and the first time we not had a LR in the household for 20 odd years. we still miss the car but wasn't prepared to take the risk of a second failure whilst relying on LR goodwill!
Glad to hear the replacement cost is becoming more manageable, I read something somewhere about the suspected cause was that one of the two crankshaft manufacturers, were using totally different methods, one was casting and the other forged, it could well be just absolute rubbish from the Internet, but according to the article LR are now only using one manufacturer, but maybe some truth in it, but who knows.
