Buying advice

Hi all

Close to buying a D4 (2013-2016), hse or hse luxury or xxv.
Looks like I can pick up a 2013 for roughly 20k through to a 2016 for more like 30k.

Any advice on if there is a particular sweet spot in terms of year/spec?

My understanding is a 2013 is pre start stop and higher tax and slightly less up to date styling (not sure if rear entertainment also old tech?), 2014-15 are facelifted and have start stop and cheaper to tax, and 2016 are Adblue and are EU6. I don’t particularly need EU6 so was thinking a 2014 would do me (and possibly get an xxv as I gather it comes with all options) but just seen a 2013 hse luxury in my preferred colour of green so interested in views.

I am a bit worried about the crankshaft risk but the Mrs won’t let me buy a TDV8 L322 which was the only other thing I was remotely considering (apart from an XC90 albeit that just seems overly sensible…)

Thanks in advance
Jack

The crack shaft maybe an issue and it seems pretty much a lucky/unlucky situation if it does go.

Bear in mind that there are lots of postings on here about crankshafts that have gone but in comparison to the number of Discos driving on the road it is a relatively low percentage.

All 2013 onward will be 8-speed, rotary gear knob. Some people on here say the start/stop is a PIA and disable it.

Test drive a number of different models, do your homework, check all the buttons work and make your choice. Happy motoring Very Happy

United Kingdom 2014 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 XXV LE Auto Causeway GreyDiscovery 4

I went from a MY2016 D4 HSE Lux (lease car) to owning my own 2014 D4 XXV.

I do not regret the change one bit. The XXV spec sold it to me.

BUT be aware the XXV gearbox map is not as good as the later D4s (I can't say when the map changed) and I mean noticeably not as good. Tbh the 2016 gearbox map is astonishing in how it delivers power.

You can have Bodsy map the older gearbox and I did that, it is almost (95%) as good as the 2016 was now.

2014 EU5 v 2016 EU6 engine has congestion/ULEZ implications if that's an issue.

You can find rear air con in a later EU6 car but it is less common and probably won't have the high end spec. XXV has the lot.

Hope that helps..

Thumbs Up
 Jim

Latter engine/gearbox is an improvement.
Have been running an MY15 HSE Lux alongside a MY16 Graphite (on sales thread) for the last 6 years & it's a noticeable difference.
Kids never use the rear ent in mine preferring iPads etc.

Is there anything on the XXV apart from rear aircon (and maybe the wooden steering wheel) which you would call out in particular?

Wooden steering wheel? Not sure mine has one of those.. heated piano black with perforated leather in mine.

Rear air con was big for me. Anyone in the rear two rows (it's in both) will miss it if they have experienced it.

I like the leather colour and well, all the toys really.

Things I REALLY use, not all are XXV specific.

The radar in the wing mirrors killing the blind spot when overtaking.
Reversing radar which detects crossing traffic so you don't reverse out
Heated steering wheel
Rear air con for kids/adult rear passengers
Some of the cameras (quality better than on my MY2016 - search on here for endless theories why).
TV (front, me).
Cruise control.
Fridge.
Heated seats.

That's it in the main... I like the colour, interior and look of the XXV other than kit/toys.

Plenty on EBay so maybe go view one? Be warned, when I was looking I found 2 that had been seriously clocked and not with much work to uncover it (I use vcheck.uk). Exclusivity sometimes tempts people...

Are all d4 tow bars rated to pull 3500kg whether factory fitted or aftermarket?

You might be able to find one at an approved dealer which might help your chances if the crank goes
