Byways in Cambridgeshire

I emailed Cambridgeshire County Council asking about BOAT's that we could take our Disco down, including some questions about a couple near us in the village of Over that are signposted as Byways but have no coloured arrows depicting of which sort...

I recieved the following reply:

Quote:
Dear Lou&ChrisTDV6

You should be able to find this information on our web site. Open up the interactive mapping page

http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/environme...sofway.htm

You can search by location for rights of way and you can switch on the Traffic Regulation Orders, which will show you which byways are closed to vehicles. Clicking on the No-entry sign will give you information on the closures. Many are shut over the winter to stop them becoming impassable, but should be opening up again this month.

Hither Way and Ouse Fen Bank are not showing as having TRO's so should be open all year round.

With best wishes

The little online map tool seems pretty good - you can view TRO's etc without having to look them up on a separate document.

Thanks for posting that. Nice to see council being so helpful. We usually drive a few byways round the Thetford area. Maybe try Cambridgeshire in the future. Thumbs Up

There are apparently some nice ones Aldreth way... but none of them open until the 30th of this month.

Just looking for some tame (but interesting) ones really that are suitable for the Mrs and I to take our standard D3 down after work etc without anyone else.

Wow not before time.
This is great I had pretty much given up laning in Cambs as they all seemed to have seasonal TRO's and they seem to extend them all the time with all the wet weather we have had over the last few years.
Now I can check them out from my armchair. Thumbs Up

Hi.
I'm in Huntingdon with my D3 that I have had for 6 months and really want to take it off road locally. I don't know of any green lanes around here and would prefer to be accompanied, certainly for the first time out to mainly pick up some tips so I don't prang it.
If anyone is planning on driving one soon near me would you mind if I tagged along?

A bit of a bump for an old thread - but just to let you know that I'm finding that the online Definitive Map for Cambridgeshire to be a bit less definitive than it should be.

I did some lanes around Little Downham (near Ely) this evening. The online map shows TROs for several lanes south of Little Downham - though the link to the PDF doesn't work so you can't see the details - and it turns out the TROs are seasonal and not currently in force.

Yet there was a TRO for the Beild Drove loop immediately east of Little Downham (road closed signs and notices posted) which is not shown on the online map.

I'll have a moan to Cambs CC about this tomorrow.

I have found a few really good (and fairly simple / shiny-D4-safe) open lanes - will put together a separate thread with some maps/video in due course.

I emailed Cambs CC this morning and had an almost immediate response by phone - so very impressed. Indeed Cambs CC seems to be very positive towards green lane byways.

Here's what I learned:

-- The Definitive map only shows the "permanent" TROs, like the seasonal one on Hurst Lane (and they were not aware of the issue with linking to the PDFs, which they're now looking at)

-- For any temporary TROs, these are posted on roadworks.org ... and indeed the closures I found on Beild Drove are posted there. These were for Network Rail work on the level crossings - though it looks like the work is now finished (due by 31 July). My comments on the very confusing road closure signs/notices on location were taken on board readily. The only downside is that the resolution of the map on roadworks.org doesn't show the actual byways.

So... if you're laning in Cambridgeshire I would do the following:
1. Plan your route on a 1:25000 OS map using the BOATs
2. Check roadworks.org for any TROs / closures in that general vicinity. If there are some, click on the icon on roadworks.org to see the details - including dates and byway number
3. Check back on the Definitive Map for that byway number to ensure that the route you're planning isn't affected by the TRO (click on the brown line, and a pop-up shows the byway number)

Here are a few D3/4-safe green lane routes in the Fens that I've done recently. See links for interactive Google Maps, and for one of the routes a YouTube video.

Usual green lane rules and cautions apply of course - but these routes were all "safe" for a regular road D4 with stock tyres (20" Pirelli Scorpion Zero M+S). This was after a long dry period so the ground is very hard, but these routes are grassy so unlikely to get *too* muddy.

Just to bring this back from the dead... Does anyone know what the lanes are like around Witchford / Sutton / Ely? I have noticed the seasonal ones are now open but do not know what condition they are in or whether they are D3 friendly...

Hi, It's been a year or so since i was last out that way, Usually in the summer months most of them are drivable in a standard speck car, The one's that aren't seasonal get terrorised over the winter months by the minority. Also a lot of the non seasonal ones are used as farm tracks and as they grow a lot of stuff that gets harvested in October onwards there are some big ruts, if you can call them ruts. So its well worth walking the iffy looking bits first. I nearly fell foul in my Defender one winter on the way to work one morning. The only ones i remember being tight were between Ely and Little Downham.
I'd be interested in tagging along if you out and about for a day.

Thanks for that! I'll probably have a look around some of the seasonal ones between Witchford and Witcham Toll in the next few days after work.

If you ever fancy it, let me know on here! I am about most Sundays!

Thanks
