Cam locking pin won’t insert
So I can get the right (water pump side) pin in but not the left (alternator). Even without the right pin in so I’m only playing with the left pin it never sinks in as deep as the right one. Looks exactly the same position as Disco Mikeys pics. Am I missing a trick?

Is there the remains of a previous locking tool broken off in there?
Just wondering if someone previously turned the engine before removing the tool!! yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

If the cam timing is not 99% perfect, the pin won't fit
It wouldn't be the first time I've had to remove the belt, and turn the cam pulley to get the pin in the holeMy D3 Build Thread

I get that
But surely the pin should fit if it’s the only thing I’m trying to turn/lock. I reckon profsrg may have a theory - but I thought the pin just squeezed in between a nub rather than into a hole? The end of a pin would surely just fall out?
Not looking forward to tomorrow already ☹️

It slides through a hole in the pulley, and locates in a deep hole in the cylinder head
Because of the critical nature of the cam timing, tolerances are very fine, so if its not aligned almost perfectly, the pin won't locate into the head My D3 Build Thread

Wait, reread your post properly
Get a mirror, and see if you can see the hole, or anything broken inside it, or any damage around the opening that may cause it not to fitMy D3 Build Thread
I have had this a few times, I think its down to the belt slacken off over time, and its always the left pin from the front thats tight to get in.
If you have the other pin in and the locking tool in the crank just carry on and when you get the old belt off just turn the cam with a spanner and insert the pin before fitting the new belt.

Got them both locked independently now. Used a thinner drill bit to find location. Can’t get both fully in at the same time but am doing oil pump anyway so starter is now dangling awaiting a wiggle and crank locking tool. Thanks for all the help as usual will update on progress next weekend 🙂
