I am thinking of buying a 2007 Commercial.
It has a full service history and had the cambelts changed in August 2014 at 69,000 miles. It has now done 112,000 miles, so is it due another change yet? What is a typical cost of having the belts done?
Many thanks.
Glen.

Is that a common failure then? Is it easy to do?

Yes Very on a 2007my and it will destroy the engine if it fails, it will not give any warning. It is not just a matter of it being changed more important it is the the stronger type, do a search and be prepared for a lot of reading. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

There are loads of threads on here regarding engine failure due to pumps breaking
No, I haven't but you guys are helping me catch up!

Ok. Have been reading. So to do the pump the belts have to come off and be changed anyway. Looks like quite an expense if I have to pay to have it done, so might be better to look for a slightly later D3 Commercial (or possibly a D4) with the stronger pump. At what date were they changed?

If you buy a later one (3.0) you run the risk of the crank snapping
Belts get changed when you change the oil pump - the part isn't massively expensive and it just adds to the labour when having the belts done, so not a huge cost increase. Must stop buying shiny toys....

Yes, I am definitely avoiding the 3.0, as I had heard about the cranks snapping. Looks like a 2009 D3, or an early 2.7 D4 might be best.

@GDM just be aware early MY2009 still have the weak pump fitted, you have two options, get one with history and paper work so you know the pump has been changed, or buy one and change it anyway for piece of mind.
As you can see its a mine field ...

Hi, so being a noob and working through all the other threads, is it correct to say only the 3.0 has the weak crank?
Will be checking my 09 D3 2.7 oil pump this week.

Flack,
Thanks for that.
I have just enquired about a 2010 2.7 D4 Commercial, 77,000 miles, should have the better pump but turns out the cambelt hasn't been done and the P.O. has lost the history!
The 07 that I originally asked about looks tidy and has a good history, so if I could get that a bit cheaper and do the pump and belts, that might be the best option. The seller (a dealer) reckons the genuine parts are only £255 but A. F. are about £350 for everything O. E. The seller also says £200 labour, so will only drop £450 on the price, or I pay the full price and he has the work done but I am not so keen on this.

£255 is the right price for genuine front and rear belts with the idlers but the oil pump is over £200 on its own from LR

aja4x4,
That sounds about right. I have no confidence that the dealer will do all of the work properly, as he is quoting such low figures. A. F. do a complete belt kit, including O. E. oil pump, for £325-00. Adding in sealant and a new crankshaft bolt on top takes it to, more or less, £350.

Personally I wouldn't fret about the crankshaft. Any car you buy can implode for one reason or another. They all have faults. Life is too short to worry.
Have a look at this: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/sale-2013-d...92055.html
The D4 is a much nicer place to be than a D3 and I love both. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT
BAS FBH control
