Cambelt, Oil Pump, Water Pump - Anything Else?
So, I'm having the cambelt changed, and while they're doing it, the oil and water pumps too (all OEM parts). Oil change as well obviously.
Is there anything else I should get done while they've got all that guff on the front of the engine out of the way?
Any thoughts appreciated...
(Having rear belt and transmission oil flush/change next month).

Given the car's age it's worth considering renewing both cam pulleys!
They are known to shatter usually the R/H (drivers side) but the left side does suffer the same, albeit less often is seems.
Either way you're left with serious top end damage if one does let go. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks. I've told them to replace all tensioners if they prove necessary on inspection.

The tensioner and idler bearings will come with the OEM kit (Dayco)
If the garage is buying the parts individually get them to change everything, ie the belt, both idlers, the tensioner, and tensioner bolt, though I can't see why they'd buy them that way.
If you opt to change the pulleys they're available from Island 4x4 for around £80 each plus vat. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I'm sure they will. Wicken 4x4 are all Land Rover trained Technicians. I wouldn't trust anyone else. The rear belt is part of the package, but I've asked them to do that next month instead. I want to concentrate my money on what's behind the "guff" this month... I have to pace myself budget-wise.
Concentrating on the "potentially catastrophic" this month.
Christian and Vera will say don't own a D3 unless you can work on it yourself; but I don't have their set-up, let alone expertise... or time for that matter

A garage won’t change the cam pulleys prof is talking about routinely.
You would probably need to supply them for the garage to do it. Or they may refuse to use supplied parts. Difficult that one
They are more important than a water pump change for example.
You did ask. Shame the answer is another £160!
In my response I would change the tensioner bolt if it’s an early car.

Okay, this is where my lack of knowledge kicks in. The garage has no issue fitting the parts I supply. I'm supplying the OEM pumps.

Ah, you read my mind... I was just going to ask! What about the bolts?

I haven't found a source for the bolts, but tbh I would be happy re-using the old ones, they aren't torqued particularly tightly and they aren't single use as far as I'm aware. If I could find them and buy them for a few quid I probably would, but I haven't so far.
The point of failure on the camshaft pulley is normally the spokes of the pulley. Never heard of a failure of the bolts.

Ok thanks. The pulleys are ordered. I'm sure my guys at Wicken 4x4 will have the bolts if they think it necessary anyway.

Good shout, would be a shame to do the belts and pumps only for the camshaft pulleys to break later.
I started this thread a while ago to gather info on doing the timing belts myself with some very useful input from Prof, Pete K and others, may be of interest for you. When I do mine I'm also going to change the thermostat housing water outlet as I believe these can fail due to age and mileage / heat cycles and lead to sudden loss of a lot of coolant, obviously not a good thing.

The German guy says you can reuse the bolts 2 or 3 times.
I've reused mine. Just difficult doing the angle tightening on them, (so didn't do the full 90°)

Does anyone have an alternative phone number for Island 4x4? I'm having an issue getting confirmation of the purchase of the pulleys I made. Apparently, their website crashed just as I made the purchase, and even though PayPal has confirmed my payment went through., The website is showing that I've made no purchases, and the items are still showing in my "shopping basket". Their published telephone number seems to go unanswered and I have had no response to multiple emails.
Quite a long trek for me if I have to go down to Maidstone to sort it out.
