Came back from holiday to a dead D4!

I’ve been away for 3 weeks, leaving the D4 on the drive.

Came to move it this eve, and the battery was dead. It just about managed to put a few random lights on the dash, things switching on and off all over, and ended up with me not being able to switch off the ignition. Instrument pack was staying on (sort of) showing fuel and temp contents, whilst everything was off.

Pressing the start button to try and switch it all off just reversed the situation -ie instruments went off, but hevac and infotainment tried to switch on.

I had to move it, so jumped it from my Defender, and took it on a 20 minute run.

Volts were up to 15.0 when driving and it’s now home and switched off at 12.4.

My CTek is busted so no means of charging at the moment other than driving.

One question I have of the more knowledgeable. After a battery drain like this, whether I replace the battery, or not, do I need to do anything about resetting the BMS?

I am pretty sure that the Blackvue was left on and and I also have the power socket relays jumped to be always live. Battery is 2 years old, Halfords AGM ‘stop start’ as recommended by Halfords. It’s still in warranty.

It’s your car’s way of saying that you should have gone to somewhere rainy & cold and taken her. Whistle Whistle

I did find just before I sold my D4 the 18 month old AGM battery was getting a bit ropey and needed charged much more.

Mine was dead after being left at Newcastle airport for 2 weeks....again, I’d left the Blackvue on inadvertently.
I fully charged it the next day after getting jumped by the AA to get home. I never had any issues afterwards and didn’t reset the BMS. I put a new battery in earlier this year, and again didn’t bother with resetting the BMS after and again, have had no issues
I always fully charge the battery before going away now, if I know the car is going to be sitting for any length of time.

If I’m leaving the car at the airport now, I keep an emergency jump starter in it...a few suggestions here

I have replaced both batteries on separate occasions but the BMS has never been reset, everything worked fine afterwards. Thumbs Up

Take it back, get a new one ... resets warranty period if I'm not mistaken.

Gareth - regularly left my D4 for at least 3 weeks with no issues on the original battery which was nearly 8.5 years old last time I did it - but nothing would have drawn power - so I suspect your Blackview etc. is the issue. The only time it ever had a flat battery was when the CSOV failed and I didn’t drive it for a few weeks but kept leaving the ignition and lights on as I messed about with it - just charged it up, no issues.
Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

I’ve taken 3 batteries back to Halfords in my time, the first 2 I was given new receipts which then gave you another 5 years. The RRS battery I exchanged last month due to the same issues as the OP, didn’t get me a new receipt, I got the old one back so the 5 year guarantee is from when I purchased it in February. May just be look of the draw.

The fault on my car was a parasitic draw from the camera module. I found it quite quickly as I had my suspicions, a few months earlier my car threw a wobble, it started and died which it’s never done before. When I restarted it, all was good except the cameras weren’t working. I found a blown fuse, replaced it and the cameras were fine. But a few weeks later (after driving the car regularly) I left it for 3 days and it was dead. I recharged the battery and it was good for a few more weeks and then died. Recharged it but didn’t trust it for my 1 week holiday and just as well because it died again.

That’s when I tested the system and found the issue. What I didn’t expect, was for a 5 month old battery to be goosed too. I don’t know what came first, camera module fault or battery internal failure but I suspect the battery. There’s someone on the forum with an identical battery and similar symptoms and the Halfords store manager told me they had received a couple of other returns of the same YUASA brand but different sizes.

Thanks chaps. I think I’ll go and get myself a new quality battery charger first.

I’ll also take the car to Halfords when I get chance and have a word. Its got a 4 year warranty, but it does say on ticket that any replacement provided under the warranty will only be warrantied from the sale date of the original item. So if they change it, it will be 2 years remaining.

Gareth, both the batteries on my 2016 D4 needed replacing after approx. 2.5 years. Fortunately that was done under warranty.

Hopefully Halfords will swap it for a new one. Thumbs Up

I would reset the BMS after giving a full re-charge.

Found earlier models up to MY14 didn't seem to like a discharge situation and unless the BMS reset, system never seemed to recognize battery had been replenished from outside source.

Things like pre heat timer would not function as it would think battery too low, audio etc would switch off much quicker with low level battery warnings coming on much sooner, even with a full recharge, unless BMS reset afterwards.

Dead easy to do Thumbs Up

Yes, got iid to do it.

Well Narpy, the solid state fuses were blown in my CTek, and I still had a couple from last time I fixed it. So replaced them, and plugged it in, and they both blew again immediately. Nothing else obviously wrong, so beyond my abilities.

Borrowed a Ring smart charger from my brother and it’s currently doing its smart stuff!

Well after 24 hours on recovery charge, it only just started this morning.

Halfords have replaced it without quibble.
