Much superior to travelling to & from Dover & being stressed by on all the roads around Calais.
NJSS
But very very expensive in comparison I believe
Hence we always go Eurotunnel - Tesco Clubcard is your friend

We camped and caravanned in Vendee for 10 years running
Our perfect site was La Yole in Vendee, close to St Jean de Monts
Perfect location for beach, towns, villes, St Gilles. Medium size but not Butlins, with lovely outdoor and indoor pool and peaceful
There is plenty to do within 5 to 30 mins drive and weve never been bored after 10 years!
Weve used a tent, a caravan and also one of there rented statics a few times which are excellent and good value, when you weigh up cost of towing/ ferry etc
Wherever you end up buy a book on Vendee, many hidden treasures
Make sure youve got all you need for France travelling the police are pretty hot on making a few quid if youve forgotton some essential like yellow vests for all passengers etc ....................................................................................................
If my wife ever sells my stuff for what she thinks I paid for them, you lot are gonna get some bargains!

A couple of comments
Most of the sites in the Vendee near to the beaches will be sandy pitches - dont know if that affects you pitching your tent. They also tend to be small pitches (80 to 100mtr sq). It gives most of us with T/A tintents an issue, but if you just move back inland a few miles (quite often less than 5 miles), you get better sites, with grass and larger pitches. We've used quite a few up and down the Vendee over the years, and one of the nicest is a Dutch site near Coex, La Ferme du Latois (https://www.rcn.nl/en/camping/france/vendee/rcn-la-ferme-du-latois/camping). Less than 10 mins to beaches & St Gilles, and big supermakets, and you can ride your bike into Coex for local shops.
Less than 5 hrs from Caen (with tintent on the back) and almost all motorway with no tolls aprt from last 30 miles

We stayed here a few years ago with kids aged 10-12 & all had a great week.
Booked with someone like Canvas holidays though so didn't take our own tent with us.

Hi.
Been to this region for a few years now, Les sables out Sable D'lonne is excellent and right on the beach. A good website is Carisma holidays there sites are all on the beach. You can reach it from Calais within 5 hours nad is close to some really good attractions such as Puy De Foy, Chateau des Adventures and the castle at Talmont St Hilare.

Nice crossing £££ wanting £1000 in August. So we're going to Le Havre instead. Andy.

Thanks for all the good suggestions
Al - I had read a couple of reviews on sites close to beaches and as well as small sandy pitches it seems noisey
So we are looking at one about 6 clicks inland as don't mind driving to the beach. Our tent is close on 8mx5.5m so we need a bit of space
Have also decided on tunnel as I can't stand boats and the cost is a lot more on the ferries and timing of boat closer against tunnel and 5 hour drive is about the same D4 HSE - Aintree Green

yep, some tents are pretty big, so look for somewhere with (at least) 150sq Mtr pitches. That Dutch site had some huge pitches, I think one we had must have been close on 250sq mtrs.
