Can anyone confirm how the IID calculates the oil volume
Hi all
As some of you are aware my oil level sensor is playing up but using the IID tool i still
get the "Calculated" measurement.
So-How does the IID tool calculate the engine volume measurement? The engine oil measurement is 0.0m as expected with a dodgy sensor but i get a calculated volume of 6.3l
Mine reads like the photo below but the "engine oil level-measured" is 0.0m. As well as an active fault for the sensor
Can i take the "engine oil volume-calculated" as fairly accurate until i get the sensor swapped as there is no other way to measure the oil?

Mine just a seems to guess the volume.
This is my experience with it,
Sucked out the old oil using the vacuum tube, and removed just under 6.0ltrs so all OK (Car oil level was indicating full).
Fitted new oil filter and refilled with 5.0ltrs of new oil, ran the engine for 10 minutes, left the engine off for 10 minutes then checked the oil level using the vehicle level display and my iidtool.
This is where things went a bit strange. Vehicle display showed just above minimum and said add 1.0ltr, iidtool indicated 5.8ltrs. Left it another minutes no change on either display. Added 0.5ltr, ran engine for 10 minutes, off for 10 minutes and rechecked. Vehicle display now showing halfway, iidtool 6.3ltrs. Added another 0.4ltrs (5.9ltrs total), ran engine for 10 minutes, off for 10 minutes and rechecked. Vehicle display now showing full, iidtool 6.7ltrs.
Rechecked levels again the next morning on a cold engine (Oil temp 24*C) using the vehicle display and iidtool.
Vehicle display still showing maximum, iidtool measured has dropped by 1.0 m (Whatever that unit is?) and calculated volume now 6.6ltrs.MY14 TDV6

Thanks guys. Think to be on the safe side i am going to drop the oil out and refill with the correct amount. May add 2.5l at first and see what the iid tool reads
There are no oil leaks and no smoke so i am fairly sure there is no problem with oil being used but want to make sure i have the right amount in until i get the opportunity to get the sump off and change the sensor.
Mikey, you say it takes readings from the PCM to calculate the oil volume. What readings are these likely to be?Previous Discos
