Can somebody tell me what this is please

I have had no end of problems with my disco 3 TDV6. It gives me all kinds of problems starting in the mornings (sometimes won’t start at all). When it eventually does start, it runs terribly (engine turns off and won’t start again until I turn ignition switch all the way off and then it will start again) until it gets to normal operating temp. I must say that once it starts, it starts easily from then on.

Once it gets to normal operating temp. It seems to run smoothly with just the occasional hiccup on acceleration.

I recently had it serviced and they changed the fuel filter but it ran fine for nearly a week after this.

I was poking around under the bonnet and found what looks like a vacuum servo (I have attached a couple of Picts. It has what looks like a place to put a vacuum hose but nothing connected. Could this be the cause of my problems?

I had one mechanic suggest injectors May need replacing but this happened all of a sudden and there is no engine lights coming on.

They just replaced the crank shaft position sensor (because the scanner came up with crank sensor a couple of times). That didn’t fix it either.

Please help me, it’s driving me broke as mechanics are coming up with all sorts of fixes and each time putting another great big dent in my bank balance.

Thanks

No that’s supposed to be like that. Sounds like it could be the low pressure fuel pump

1st priority is to get the fault codes read, and post them here.

So we cleared to 100 or so faults. Drove the car for about 25km, turned it off left it overnight tried to start and it is throwing no major fault codes. EGR being the worst.

Mech reckons it might be the HPFP but is there any way to prove this before we go to the expense of changing it.

Still doesn’t explain why it runs fine once you get it warm!!!!

Any ideas?

If you are referring to the Vac unit on top of the inlet manifold this is not used on the TDV6, so ignore it.
I would suggest you invest in your own diagnostic kit and post the codes back here. At the least, you will feel better about the information you are obtaining, and therefore have some level of confidence in what you can provide on here!! You will also be able to do your own diagnostics from now on. Thumbs Up

Get your glow plugs tested and make sure you go through the correct start process and wait until the glow plugs light goes out. Are you on AULRO and asked there?

It show only egr for an error. It appears that if the engine is turned off for more than r hours it won’t start without a lot of coaxing. Once it has started, runs dog rough for 20 mins or so the comes good.

Does that sound like glow plugs?

Seems funny it happened after the filter was changed. Are all the pipes on correctly and the filter lined up?

Frank

Who is your mechanic? Did you take it to British Offroad at Forest Glenn?

I’ve been using a mech at Noosaville. Next stop is British off-road. 👍

If you find a mechanic in Noosaville you trust then you are too trusting. Don't go to the LR guy in Gympie ... probably good on Defenders but D3's have left a few capable mechanics behind.

British Offroad are expensive but their lead mechanic is very good. They stuffed up some of my work but I think I had a yr12 on work experience... sometimes paying for the right diagnosis from an expensive shop saves you money. I really hate recommending them - they have an 'upselling' whiteboard for their 'sales facilitators' visible to customers.

Good luck!
