The gearbox work the same. No problem because it serves only to eliminate the troubles to the radio.
I have removed him and then changed with calm; you must remove the panel of inferior protection to see it.

I have taken the description of his function from the manual of factory zf; in the D3 it will have another use.

I appreciate the thread is quit old but I'm posting in case someone new is researching this fault.
I had this capacitor go a couple of months back at a very inopportune moment I was at my local refuse tip just emptied the truck, went to start and all I got was a whole Christmas tree of faults, although the engine did start.
Apart from the faults the gear lever was stuck in park This meant I couldn't even push the trick out of the yard which I had been warned was closing in half an hour.
After frantic calls to my local dealer they put a tech on the line, I explained the symptoms and he said it's the capacitor on the gearbox and went on to explain how I could get under the vehicle and remove the plug to the capacitor. This was in mid-winter at the local tip!!!! so then he told me how to remove the centre console to get to the emergency release for the the gear lever. This meant I could get home in "Limp" mode. (lucky I had a small screwdriver and was able to remove the Torx screw that hold down the centre console ).
Anyway I took mine straight to the dealer who very kindly replaced the capacitor next day without an appointment, and promptly relieved me of £152.83 inc vat. (but they did do a complimentary visual health check )
But the point of the post is that the capacitor only costs £17.36 + vat (and that's dealer price) the part number was LR020488.
Hope this helps anyone else who finds them self in this situation
PS: it usually blows fuse F30, and leaves a whole bunch of DTC's to clear

When I had mine replaced the tech said it was ok to run in an emergency with it disconnected but warned that it was there to catch ignition spikes to protect the gearbox ECU which I believe is inside the gearbox, so not an easy job to replace even if it's possible Cheers, Chris in Cambridge

Mmmm... I always thought it was something to do with preventing transmission whine interfering with the radio... That sounds a bit more important! Perhaps a job for the summer! Thanks2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

For what it's worth, I had loads of problems maybe 12 months ago and it appears it was all down to the little thing stuck on the side of the gearbox!!!!! I disconnected it and went and duly bought a new one.
Still haven't got around to fitting the new one and to be honest, as far as I am aware it has made no difference what so ever!
Guess it does actually do something, but I don't know what cos I've had no ill effects .. still learning )
Isofix car seat, Isofix baby seat base, crushed carpet crisps, sticky leather seats (next to Isofix car seat), upgraded front rubber cup holder things, wired up USB charge and audio for my iphone, side steps, de-tango'd lights, H7 OSRAM Nighbreakers, LED side lights, LED reverse lights, clear repeaters, Narpy Grill... tools I don't know how to use.... yet..
