Caravan led lights

Hi guys. Not sure on this one just wondering what people thought. Our caravan is a 2020 swift solitaire it has led road lights. Tow car is a disco 4 2016. The problem being the road lights all work but when plugged in the trailer light on the dash in the car doesn’t flash the parking sensors do not go off either when reversing. So do I live with it or try and fix. Any ideas greatly received

You need to add two resistors to the indicator circuits.

Wired across the feed to the indicator & earth / return.

I used these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265460066702?

You need 10ohm & at least 15 watts.

At 12v your creating 14.4 watts but at 14.6v its 21.3 watts.

Ok on an indicator it is only a 50% cycle time so dissipation will handle it better but a high wattage copes better.

I went for 25 watts as they will handle the heat better as they have bigger heat sinks.

Unlike bulbs a bigger wattage does not mean they get hotter. It means they can handle more heat created by the resistance.

Thanks for that. And will that stop reversing sensors and bring on the trailer indication

Sargent do a number of vms boxes. I needed one for my 2016 and d4.

I was fine with the d5 and 2021

Your dealer should have a test board

The d3 we had needed a different extra board so the indicators flashed correctly from sargeant but the D4 is different again the same board installed and no lights worked. Take it out the road lights work but not the trailer flash warning lamp in the car. The dealer hasn’t got a test board just a case of plug and try they said.

Sorry to highjack the thread, you need a VLM box, i ordered one for my 2016 D4- 2015 Sterling Eccles Saphire but when i picked the van up i realised it had standard lights.

Never been used/plugged in, payed £42 for it, if want it i'll take £40 posted?

Yes, it will also disable the D4 rear fog lights and stop automatic suspension height changes when selecting different TR modes (Manual height change is still possible).

I fitted two 6.8ohm 25watt resistors to an finned aluminium heatsink tucked away in the left hand boot cubby hole. The resistors are connected to a switch. The switch stays off when I’m not towing or when towing a trailer with ‘normal’ incandescent indicators, then switch it on if I’m towing a trailer with LED indicators.

Thanks for all the advice on this one. I will get hold of a couple of resistors. It is a bell of a lot cheaper than a vlm box
