How do caravan residuals work

Hi all

A strange one, my swift is now a year old and still suits us well, I'm just curious when the best time to sell and move on without loosing to much on my swift is? I seem to recall Russell saying he never lost too much.

I know the deal with cars but caravans - not a clue

I was thinking of off loading my caravan last week and spoke with my supplying dealer, they said it would be worth approximately £9000+ that's a loss of £6k over 5 years which isn't too bad

I'm keeping now as I just couldn't bring myself to going back to a tent

I lost £3k in August 2010 after only 3 months upgrading from single axle to twin

I lost £8k in 2014 changing again due to faults with 2010

We only kept the 2014 a year due to house move and lost another £6k

I'm no longer vanning as it's cheaper to go self catering Laughing

The longer you keep it the less pa you will lose - work on losing 20% vat minimum as soon as you leave dealer and shop around as deals vary dramatically especially if dealer has customer waiting for similar

Last two vans I've had a depreciated around £750 a year, I can live with that. Think a lot depends also on the type of van, a four berth will hold much better than a two. But you'll take a bigger hit in the first year. With the warranty I the current Swift we have we will be hanging on to it for awhile though.

Another thing to consider is the condition of your own, if it's dry and tidy you could trade it in for a load of trouble.

Our friends Got a price to swap 1 year old van, sales man said come back in 2 years (van will be 3 years old) and he would offer the same! Shocked our other friends found the same at another dealer's.

I have an 11 month old caravan sterling elite which where only just re-introduced last year. due to faults on the van I want to swap it out. I was asked for £6k to change and that is in 11 months. bear in mind I was going down to a swift conqueror so new van costing the same as this one did.
was also told come back in a year and we will offer the same price. the price was roughly the same from 3 separate dealers. apparently the van is to new so does not feature in the used price guides hence they are only guessing.
and that was after threatening to reject the van formally but that battle is still ongoing

If you buy new, you will always lose the vat so, your 20% down from day one.

However, caravan residuals to me seem very good.

Bought a 2005 in 2012 for £7500 and sold it for £7000 in 2015 back to the same dealer went we upgraded. He put it up for £8500..

TwinAxles have very good residuals as do fixed bed designs.

Smaller vans suffer the worst, but my view is this could change due to new cars getting lighter and lighter and not been able to tow the bigger vans.

As the car industry is making cars lighter, the caravan industry has gone heavier, as we all need solar, microwaves, sat dishes and central heating radiators apparently.
 Andy.
