careful on the air lin e

i will recount a tale of muppetry by me in the hope that others dont suffer same

Been out with the tintent and all set up this weekend and decided with the nice weather on a nice jolly to hurst castle in the solent . before setting off i was looking at the car and thought the rear tyre looked a little flat

i have TPMS but had no warning but though best check it out as i was towing the van back the next day

now on my alloys the air valve is quite short with a lock nut and no visable rubber flexible bit but i didnt give it much thought .

first tyre no prob pressure about right second tyre (the suspect one or so i thought ) again pressure about right . the handset was the older type with the gauge built into the handset and the nozzle was a little tight so gave it a waggle to remove and ...................... ow F""""""K snapped the valve clean off Big Cry one fully flat type and a very unhappy me ..... out with the bottle jack and found that with the car so low i couldnt get the jack into a position i was happy with . luckiiy as i was in a garage i managed to borrow a trolley jack and swapped over for the spare with no other mishap ..very glad i have a full size spare as i wasnt going to tow back a 2 tonne twin axle van on a spacesaver . appreciate this was my clumsiness but im a pretty practical guy and have done this kind of thing many times before without issue so be warned if you have the shorter valve types they can be fragile and if your a caravanner buy a full size spare and get a trolley jack Thumbs Up

You can buy TPMS valves off E bay but make sure you get the right one, or go to dealer and get one before having it fitted by local tyre fitter

Gents

Following on from my clumsiness with the air line ……….

I fitted the spare temporarily on the NSR and got the expected check spare warning from the TPMS system ,

The replacement valve and wheel is now fitted back on the car (NSR) and the spare wheel fitted back in its original position but im still getting the check spare warning on start up

Ive done a fault scan with the IID tool and cleared all faults but it still gives me the check spare type warning on start up (the message clears after 10 seconds)

Had a read of the manual but not seeing anything specific to this other than clear all faults routine

The part number for the valve was definitely right as ive checked it with Dan at Duckworth and it was a brand new OEM unopened valve

Any advice appreciated ..it does have me puzzled as the new valve is on the NSR and the spare back in its original position so would expect to get a warning
For the new valve NSR not the spare as this hasn’t in effect changed .

Any advice appreciated

IIRC there is something in the D4 manual about inflating the spare in close to the rear of the car,

I'm also sure you can turn off the spare wheel TPMS in the ccf with the IID tool.

My previous D4 had TPMS on all 5 but I've just pick up a 2014 Commercial which only has it on 4 as I think it was specced with space saver although it now has full size.

just as an fyi

it seems having spoken to PAT at GAP that reprogramming of the spare is a main dealer only job even the IID cant do it

a new valve on a wheel position will relearn onto the TPMS after driving as the rotation creates the result

but not the same on the spare Crying or Very sad

well you learn something every day

On the D3., we had the very rare option of TPMS and the valves were aluminium and used to corrode at the base, I had a nightmare once at a petrol station with exactly the scenario you describe. I resolved to change them all and change them again every 4-5 years...

It takes awhile for the TPS system to reset after any change, I don’t get the bit about needing a main dealer, in the CCF there is an option for “with” or “without spare”, I fitted a new spare on the front, used the old one for the spare (pot hole damaged), changed the CCF to “with spare” without any main dealer interference Shocked

You probably like me had a little be-known luck with your valve Shocked I was getting my van out of winter storage when I heard what sounded like a tyre blown, I checked round couldn’t see anything wrong and put it down to a passing lorry, hitched the van up, wound the legs up and low and behold I had got a flat in the ‘van, very similar to yours only mine are rubber and the metal part of the valve had blown out Shocked imagine that happening on a motorway, quite possibly you escaped the consequences as I did. Thumbs Up
