Should I carry out 7th service at LR - cost 2800 Pounds?

Dear D4 family,

I have a new engine fitted in September 2023 (a shaft-snapped engine at 50k miles).

Now, the service light is on. I called LR West London Sunbury Centre. They said I still need to carry out the 7th main service, even though I have a new engine, which costs 2800 pounds.

I wonder: should I do that? The new engine don't even need an oil changing. My concern: the new engine has a two-year warranty. I don't think it is going to break within two years. Should I do it at a third-party garge instead?

Thanks Leo

Maybe out of touch but that seems way over the top, thought 7 year service most expensive due to timing belt replacement, which you surely will not require.
Maybe worth phoning a few other Landrover dealers in area first to get quote, for warranty issue cover, before looking for an independant which would of thought will be less than half that price.

For the sake of the engine warranty I would see if I could find a MD who was "flexible" with regard to the work actually needed as the care & engine servicing are now "out of sinc'".

Hi,

who did the engine change Question

speak to them about what service is required, if it was a main dealer, have a moan at them for what work they are proposing now Shocked

would expect body, brakes etc to maybe still need doing but not anything on the engine other than a Prevenative oil and filter change.

if it was not a main dealer for the engine why are you going to them for a service now Exclamation

Yup, I will tried to contact the lady who is at the top customer client when I changed engine and see she is dealing with it. If not, I will go to other LR dealer and see if then can do the 1st first for my LR4.

Yup, I bought it from Hardwoods Surbiton. They are rubbish!!! They put less oil into my engine and caused the noise. They checked and changed the manifold without plugging in the fuel line and caused smoke and oil leaks when I was in Germany at Christmas time. Back and forward many times even when I point out the noise is the shaft. They didn't have any ideas and said the car was fine! After the warranty ran out. Then they changed to Sunbury and were taken over by Sytner(I didn't realize). I see better service and improvement from Sytner. They are the ones who reported to LR and required a new engine for me. But it took over 6 months to get the car back.

So now, anything to do with my car. I will search and find the best way to do it. A, LR Dealers are expensive; B, they are dumb as they used lots of apprentices who don't have any idea about the risk assessments.

I hope my 10-year LR dealers history will be a good ref for others. When you are out of warranty, find an independent garage.

This is it. My local LR specialist, Harris & Mayes (Rickmansworth) nail every issue every time without any fuss or dramas. The main guy there was telling me (after a full-on Lanoguard session on my D4) that they are struggling to find staff who know what they are doing. I asked him if they ever try & poach the Watford JLR guys and he replied along the lines of 'We tried that & they were absolutely useless' (I'm paraphrasing here). Apparently its a country wide thing. Kids are just not interested in car mechanics as a career as they all trying to become social media monkeys or prefer shooting aliens in the face in their bedrooms...

It seems to me that Land Rover Corporate should instill some oversight.
If an engine was replaced at a dealer (as it was in my LR2, implying yes; a brand shiny new engine) should that not reset the clock on the maintenance schedule on the engine component of the vehicle??

And wouldn’t/shouldn’t every dealer on the planet, running the vin be aware that the engine was replaced??

Yes, I submit the argument that these simple management and service processes could use some oversight and management from corporate.

Now if the owner is playing musical chairs with both registered and non registered service facilities, all bets are off.

Re: Should I carry out 7th service at LR - cost 2800 Pounds?

Thanks to your comments. Good news winbeldon landrover can do it without touching timing belt for 440 pounds.

How I ended up at wimbledon?
Because I found out they've forgotten to put the wheel nuts' key back into my grove box, when I tried change brake discs at friend's garage.
I've gone to the west london Synter yesterday.
This is what they've said: "We have matter key".
We don't have any customer one.
They tried to use master key to find out what the key code is.
They come back and tell me: '' we don't have your nuts' master key''
'How you remove my wheel without using my key?'
'changing the engine doesn't requet removing any wheels'
'Fair enough' Then I left.

A bit of drama but I solved this problem by your advice.

many thanks

btw, Winbeldon Landrover mathed it and it is code J! Thanks for them. I will need to order one online.

Cannot beat Wimbledon Land Rover. Been using them for years since constantly being stung by GS Which I believe is now Sytner at Kempton. Nothing is too much trouble for Michael and his team at WLR, too many sharp intakes of breath at GS/Sytner. When someone took time and trouble with you, they had left next visit.
WLR will never tell you that something is needed when it isn’t.

That brought up another story.
i used Wimbledon LR long ago. Once, I serviced my car at WLR. I received a call from police said we found a car clone you reg on M25 near woking. Right after second service at WLR, my d4 got stolen right after. What a coincident! Then I stoped using them after I brought a new D4. And I paid 10k more for the gap.
