CB radios advice on buying one

Looking for a CB radio for the weekend. brought one last year for morocco and it failed Big Cry took it back, borrowed a midland handheld and it was great and found it easier to locate in the vehicle.

Whats some of my options, thinking of buying the handheld midland just because it is smaller and did the job, just that it is twice as expensive as others once you add the hand mic as well.

anyone know of a supplier near southend, basildon (essex) area where i can go and see examples and buy and get the roof mount, cable etc?

thanks. Thumbs Up

Tony,

These people are in Hadleigh http://www.wsplc.com/

I wanted a handheld so I use:

&
http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/intek-mag-1345.html

Also comes with a car kit. On the Defender I had one hard wired in, but could then not use it if I ever left the car. The constant banging of the aerial from tree's, car parks, drive throughs etc also started to annoy after a while...

You could hear all that above the noise of a defender? Wink Laughing Thumbs Up

steve will try waters and stanton, they were the ones i brought my previous cb from so a little disapointed. they sell the midland handheld too, not too sure on funky areils though when i looked before. Might go with them just as i want it for the wiltshire trip this weekend. Thumbs Up

I stuck the previous cb (not handheld) between the passenger seat and centre console but could not hear the speaker as i reliey on the speaker from the cb itself, that why i wanted the handheld. will contact thunderpole and see what they can sort me. ebay is full of radios, but bit nervous buy electronics over ebay, and i want it now. I have my CB here

I also couldn't hear the speaker very well, so I solved it with a simple £5 extension speaker from Maplins. Plugged into the back of the rig, I then removed the H trim and velcro stuck it in the BIG gap you would see to the right of the screen. Simple problem solved cheaply Thumbs Up

i have my Midland mounted same as bodsy. works well and easy to see whilst driving. I just use heavy duty velcro to attach it to the trim. speaker works fine for me as i mounted it with speaker facing outwards Wink

I got a Midland Multi too, great compact and virtually fits anywhere. You can buy a complete kit including the CB, Mike,Arial,Mount. The complete kits do come pre SWR'd, but still worth checking out with a meter.

The mounts supplied are tosh for a D3, so contact RLD by pm and he makes them, I got one and are great Thumbs Up

Cheers Gareth Thumbs Up We aint allowed them in the trucks as they are so strict on hands on comunications. It all has to be hands free to be ok, although you can get a hands free mike set up on cb's nowadays, it just doesnt warrent the bill

Thats a shame, but understandable. Are most operators like this nowadays? I used have the CB on most of the time, and there would always be some good banter to be had with the truckers, but nowadays I only use it for off road comms. The airwaves seems to be full of foul mouthed dick heads these days.

That was my experience too Gareth, would never put the CB on with the kids in the car (unless for off-roading)

Got to be honest, the worst place I have encountered IDIOTS on the airwaves, is ESSEX. ALL OVER ESSEX. complete divs, some with amps, some with the vibrovoice thingy etc etc.

I only use mine now on off roading, which reminds me, got to get a decent PMR.
