Changing a wheel when off-road IMPORTANT!

Following the DISCO3.CO.UK Wales Weekend, this advice should be heeded by all Discovery3 owners who go off tarmac.

The standard jack is not very good, it lacks height, and footprint. We had a forum member suffer a puncture on a rocky section. We could not lift the car high enough with the jack to get the spare wheel on.

The trick was to raise the car to off road height before jacking, then when the car was lifted as far as the jack could go, select ACCESS height, the result was that the rear sank and the front wheel that was raised lifted the valuable 3 inches we needed to get the spare on.

The were a few issues, such as the car contantly fighting the driver in as much as it wanted to go to extended mode, not remain in access, so the driver had to continually select access whilst colleagues changed the wheel - that won't be easy if solo. I suspect opening the door may have stopped this happening, but we did not think of this at the time.

I would suggest that there is a danger of the car falling off the woefully inadequate jack - but needs must and it got us off the lane before darkness fell.

The most useful tip of all though, is get a decent jack before you go off road, and put the spare in the boot.

could you not have locked the car in access hight once jacked up??

We tried, but the car thought it was stuck, so kept trying to go into exteded mode.

Gents, interestingly this very topic was covered at the Rockingham off road centre. They suggested carrying a proper jack (which i cant see being very useful off road). My wife was horrified at the way jack and spigot need to fit in to the wishbone, she confessed to having no hesitation if getting a puncture to call out road side assistance. This seems like a very poor design fault as the Range Rover does not suffer from this

Why not just have run flat tyres? If this is the NEW - IMPROVED Land Rover of the 21st Century, and we are paying hefty prices for the new technology, should we ever have to worry about flats?

Our Mini has run-flats, and they don't half give a firm and noisy ride! They are also very expensive and last about 10k on a Mini.

Mini has to have them cos there is no room for a spare!!

I hate to say this but Lancaster (Reading) suggested calling out Land Rover should you require the wheel to be changed Laughing I thought BMW sold Land Rover Exclamation

To change the car's height from outside the vehicle, just lower the window and reach in.

Or even better....set the key fob to do it...

I love this feature....was so glad I didn't have to pay to have it as an extra like on the Disco 2....
