'Check Engine' Light after Battery Charging

Okay, so here's an odd one.

I've had a few woes with the battery over the last year. Tried to buy a new battery at Halfwits but they put their tester on the car and pronounced the battery and charging system to be A1. Rolling Eyes From then on, she behaved herself impeccably.

Well, whenever she broke, it was down to something else, which isn't quite the same thing.

Anyhow, I gave her a clean on Wednesday before heading on a longish trip to a family gathering (normally, the dealer does it when they mend her, but as I say, she'd behaved herself recently) and on Thursday morning found she wouldn't start.

Tried a few times, then got the full-on christmas tree and gave up. Thought of jump-starting her off my other car, but gave up (the old Morris has managed it before, but it takes AAAAAAGES!) and went in my classic instead.

With the battery on charge on the CTEK, I thought all would be well this morning.

The battery was up to charge, and the CTEK had gone onto 'maintenance' mode. I thought all was well. I packed a few things into the boot, and then noticed that the charger had started up again and was on 3. I assume that's normal because I'd just taken some load out of the battery.

On starting the car (had the Low Battery - Please Start Engine message come up) she started first time, no dramas.

But the 'Check Engine' light wouldn't go out.

Not to worry, thinks I. It's like when the Airbag light pops on because of low charge when starting. Special Programs OFF, that sort of thing. It'll clear on the next restart.

It didn't. About four restarts later, it still hasn't.

I've rung my dealer and am waiting for them to call me back (after three attempts...). I was wondering; if i disconnected the battery and flashed the leads together to dissipate any charge and do a Hard Reset; would that clear it?

Sorry for the real-time narrative; I can't think in shorthand.

Now booked in at the Stealers (for the 17th August...! Hope it doesn't go 'Bang' before then... Shocked ) but I'm still wondering whether the collective have any views on my performing a hard reset.

Have you had a multimeter on the battery and did you charge direct to the battery?

I charged the battery direct using croc clips, but I haven't put the multimeter on it. Basically, because I couldn't find my multimeter... It's *somewhere*... Rolling Eyes

Ok, I know the feeling when you almost know where something is!

You have confused the battery monitoring system somewhat. The battery may be holding a charge but the BMS didn't see the charge going in. A hard reset may help, so give it a go. In the future charge via the electrics (eg tow electrics) or connect the negative croc clip to a body ground.

Ah, yes... Forgot that...! Why can't cars be simple? Never mind the dipstick: bring back starting handles! Laughing

Funny thing is; I went out to the car this morning (in the rain) to move it undercover so I could begin my investigations. No warning light. It came on as normal, and went off within a few seconds. I think that might mean that she's forgiven me. Whistle

Will head over to the forum shop and investigate a 13-pin charging lead for the CTEK, I think. Thumbs Up

Right. Multimeter found!

The battery, after a 90 minute rest from a 30 minute journey, is showing 12.56v which seems healthy.

The warning light hasn't come on either, so I think she's forgiven me.
