In port Douglas a couple of years ago I used a serviced apartment, fully furnished near town and beach. Very comfortable, "The White House", differing sizes to 3 bedroom. You can bus from Cairns airport cheaply and they drop you out front. Pt Douglas has good food and you can get out to the reef for days tours by fast boat with meals and snorkelling included. Cheap rent a cars available in Port Douglas, avoid the major chains. Make sure you have a drive to the north and perhaps do a day trip up to Mareeba, and back down to Cairns, check out the Kuranda rail station, the cable car that goes from Cains and the train back, You can get a combined bus/cable car/train ticket that keeps you out and about for at least half aday or more.
