New to this whole own your own car thing ( had a company car for 16 years). Now I have my own HSE I am trying to learn more about cars. I hear people talking on here about 'chips and re-programming'. I bought a 2nd hand HSE. 57 plate and it seems to go fine. Getting about 29.5-30mpg over a 1000 mile ride.What are these, what are the benefits, does it effect warranty etc..

try a search on the maintenance & modifications forum for help (search on Tuning or remap for example) - loads of threads on this topic available. There are a number of site sponsors who do this Re-map aswell.

Cheers, I did read lots of threads and about all I could come up with was an extra 2mpg if you spent £400 which seems a large outlay and long return

forget the improvement in fuel consumption. what a tune gives you is more useable power/torque which make the car a much better drive. Duncan

I get about 2mpg more than before but I had mine tuned at 1000miles from new so cant really remember.. Its well worth it for the extra perfomance etc, mpg improvement is a bonus Duncan

Def get 2 or 3 mpg better as long as I remember not to use the extra performance. Worth it for that, saving da planet is a bonus.

The long 6th gear makes the d3 thrifty but lacking acceleration above 130kmh which IMHO is the d3s only fault. Strong acceleration produces a change down which pushes revs out of the power band and just burns more fuel with little actual acceleration. A tune adds more torque and power meaning a change down is not necessary but if it happens acceleration is effective.
A tuning box can help but can only prolong the ECU calculated injector opening time. Timing cannot be further advanced nor can turbo boost or EGR valve opening be effected.
An ECU remap is a change to the program in the main computer of your car. Far more tuning parameters are available to be changed allowing a better more efficient adjustment for your car/driving style. A good remap from a reputable tuner e.g. TFC will change the character of the car and give you even more enjoyment. There is no risk of reducing the motors longevity by a significant amount.There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

We at Bell Auto Services also do a remap for the TDV6 giving 40bhp and 88nm of torque.
It delivery is very smooth to drive giving a nice feel even if you are pondering round town.
The tune we have designed is made on a 4x4 Dyno while also thinking about LR's rated figures for component failure and reliability.
Here is a picture of the one of theTDV6 Rangerover Sports we ran on the dyno which as you know use the same engine as theD3.
We also now have ready for customer use the BAS Remap interface that gives you full control over your remap.
This gives you the facility to return your car back to standard tuning if needed for any dealer visits and i also doubles up as a engine fault code reader .

can anyone give rough idea how a remap affects insurance premiums ie I currently pay around £450 (no points etc on licence) could I expect a 50% increase, or can anyone recommend a insurance company which deals.

As it doesn't actually change the power output of the vehicle, i know people in the past have successfully paid nothing extra in insurance premiums.....

I think what Craig meant is that it doesn't increase top speed because of the limiter ....oh did I say limiter ?
