destroying a set of alloys on a Volvo with the proper stuff
I came upon a low cost effective solution - white spirit mixed with fairy washing up liquid
The exact ratio isn't that critical say 30% white spirit a big dash of Fairy 65% water....experiment a bit the "mixture" seems to work on hardened brake dust that's burnt in without being acid or alkali & then affecting the alloy beneath whatever the "finish" is.......Ok it isn't as instant as the shop bought stuff but it saves on destroyed wheels.
The other factor is its cheap
You have to look at the warning labels on shop bought alloy cleaners to realise there is some nasty chemicals in some cleanersBREXIT - done properly.

Having never bought an alloy wheel cleaner solution before, I've purchased Sonax Xtreme rim cleaner today from Repco (after watching the Detailing link . Thanks Shiny moose ). These wheels have reasonable buildup of black deposits in the "shadows" of the spokes.
Must say that the soft pads/discs of D3's is my first experience with this problem.
Cleaned the wheels first with detergent/water and allowed to dry.
Applied Sonax and waited ....... magically turns to red with trails of spot dissolution ..... it works.
Applied twice and used a tooth brush for added vigour.
I'm impressed ....... and converted .

been having a hard time getting the burnt on brake dust/tar type of stuff off of the SE alloys. Tried everything event thought I would get new alloys that might be easier to clean.
But today I have found the answer...... some might say I'm a bit mad..... some will say NO dont use that but it works.
dont rub too hard......rub gently and all the cr4p comes off...polish them up and they are like new

yep it does work. But be gentle.
When you think about it what is a Brillo used for?
Baked on / burnt on stuff.
I wouldn't recommend doing every week or every month.
But for a couple of times a year it's ok. Then a good polish and they are gleaming.
It's my own fault they got in a state the SE wheels are a pain to keep clean.
I wonder if you can get a less abrasive steel wool!

I always thought they were for uncoated metal & glass surfaces only, certainly nothing with a 'finish'.
I have SE 10 spokes and have never had trouble shifting brake dust (however much/hard baked it is) using the meguairs spray gun wheel cleaner like this.
A bit of agitation with an old toothbrush and the wheels always come up like new.
Still cannot believe you used a brillo pad I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner is a bit expensive but it really does work. Just spray on, drink your coffee, then wash off. It's that easy and that effective. (Mr Muscle is brilliant too but I only use that on rare and extreme cases then always seals the alloys again with a good wax sealent).

I also read that you can use B n Q Brick cleaner....... now that is a step to far.
Tried and failed with sonax. Tried the clay bar approach - failed. Halfords wheel cleaner failed.
Autoglym - wheel cleaner failed. wd40 failed. Various other stuff from under the sink. failed.
Mrs DaveVX thinks I have a cleaning fetish..... yeah right!

I'm for the Mr muscle oven cleaner, used it the other day and it worked wonders on my alloys that I had left filthy for months, doesn't appear to have lost any of the finish either

I use muck off applied with old tooth brush, does the job, ok its the wifes tooth brush and the kids do it welsh petrol head
Base 5 seat, ex HA with air,terrain,tip tronic and some bling (gone)
D4 Gs 7 seat totally standard for now

Get yourself an "insdustrial" toothbrush from lakeland plastic about £15 with a couple of spare heads - Just the job - no hard scrubbing!
