Coating for roof bars

I've just bought a set of rhino bars from a forum member and am contemplating giving them a coating of black plastikote ... Not sure how resilient it will be with stuff being dragged on and off.

Anyone tried it? Or suggestions of products that have proven very durable in this scenario.

Hi,

I haven't done it, but was also thinking about it. I was also thinking of maybe using smoothrite as that would probably be more hard wearing. I use mine for work so they get a bit of a battering putting ladders on and off.

So I'd be interested to know if anyone painted their roof bars or roof rack.

I'd avoid smoothrite. It's very difficult to get a decent finish with, and when it is cured (about 6 weeks) it'll chip quite easily. If you can, I'd advise powder coating in satin black, with an etch primer base. Find a local powder coaters, and see what they say.

Raptor black would be ideal , it’s Bedliner but can be applied to anything and the crackle type finish can be heavily textured or smooth.
Mega hard finish.

I've use smoothrite and hammerite in the past and it wouldn't be the finish that bothered me. Whilst I've not suffered chipping of it (when applied in a good thick coat), it would be sloughing (ie.e dragging topmost part of it to form bumps) that I think could be an issue.

I'd have to look at Raptor carefully ... how does cost compare with powder coating ?

as for plastikote, I have some in the shed from a previous (non-car related) job. Unfortunately it's cream coloured, but I could do a test to see if it's better than smoothrite.

After watching the video that WindowLicker posted, I thought I'd look at Bullyliner as a possibility ... no sign of it on Fleabay or Amazon so found the website and emailed the manufacturer ... US based, which surprised me as I assumed from video it was Australian.

Got this response back ...

Hi Dean,

Yes we have stocks of black bullyliner here, 4x1 litre tins is £90 including vat and delivery, just drop me a mail if you wish to order and I will send over a invoice.

Regards

Mike.

Hmmm ... at just shy of £100, I think this is waaaaay to expensive for what I want to do.

If it had been about £20 for enough to do the bars plus a bit spare, might have been ok.

Decent body shop in the uk should do it for you , I had multiple bits done in Raptor coating , or ask one of the defender specialists or pick up type places.
Common place to have the bed lined in it, they may be able to do yours at the same time as a pick up bed , making it much cheaper than a standalone jod as product already in use in the gun.

Hardware,

If you can get them to just send 2 x 1L, I would go in on that with you. I am not too far and often work in Manchester, or Gods Country as they call it over here in Yorkshire!! So could get ti delivered to you and I could pick it up from you. I would only need 1L for what I need and £25 doesn't sound too bad for a litre.

I am going to have to repaint my towbar plate and I think this will be better than powder, plus I should have a fair bit left over for other stuff. Let me know if you do want to do it. I am now trying to prioritise my jobs, just in case work dries up, but this is a necessary job either way.

I've told them what we are each aiming to do and asked if they do smaller kits.

haven't found a website yet but will have a look.
